Tracker won't talk to me now to confirm battery level. Wonder if it is defunct and causing the issues. Teleoctomatics looking into it and Subaru Assistance on their way to check battery level to see if it is a dud. Can't knock the service but getting a bit fed up with it all now................

That's the problem of living in the middle of nowhere, no signal! The people from Oct. are telling me they can't get a response from my car either even though it is parked in an area with a signal they are blaming SMS but say they can pick up the actual tracking device. Glad I'm not paying for this at the moment.

the trouble with the Latest version of the sti is the smart entry system, its always on the hunt for a signal from the fob, in theory when it can find it it's supposed to go to sleep and check every now and again, That teamed with the tracker and alarm drain they take a little bit of juice from the battery

Because it is free in the first year (in essence the cost is covered elsewhere). My insurance company don't require it and crime is very low here so not sure if worth renewing in the future. The tracker finally spoke to me and gave me 13.1 volts. AA man turned up and told me 13.0 volts (after 30mins drive) and 'good' in their book. Should I be worried, last time the car texted me at the end of November it was at 13.4 volts. Maybe I will go out and buy me a trickle charger this weekend. The test will be to leave it all weekend and text it on Monday after my drive to work. Rob, surely this would mean many people stranded at the airport after a two week holiday and must be an overlooked issue? Had a 330s a few years ago with same security / door system and never had a problem and was commuting to the same place.

maybe the AA have tested the volts but have they tested the amps in the battery. the supplying dealer has a duty to do a deep charge cycle on the battery before the car is handed over and must have check logs to back this up.

We overnight charge every new vehicle we get and carry out a full deep charge cycle so the sulpher which has stuck to the plates within the battery return to the electrolyte so the specific gravity is correct and you have the most optimum power from it.

Maybe the battery does show good voltage but volts are no use without amps. I dare bet if you measure the specific gravity of the electrolyte is it will be around 1.120 which means the battery is in a discharged state. You are aiming for the specific gravity to be 1.265 for it to be 100% fully charged.
to test you need a hydrometer.

a bit of info from a bullitin we had sent round a while ago to back up what I was saying about the battery being charged prior to customer collection.

Subject: BATTERY CHARGE STATE

Model(s): ALL NEW SUBARU MODELS

We are in receipt of statistical data by month from Mondial (Subaru Assistance) that provides us with information such as the top 20 reasons for Subaru vehicle owners requiring assistance.

The number one need for assistance is consistently poor battery charge state in a relatively short space of time after taking delivery. Some owners finding it necessary to request assistance within 1 month!

Some flat batteries are caused by client error however, there are a vast majority where the cause of the battery drain cannot be identified and it has to be suspected to be an original poor charge state.

One of the checks to be performed as part of the pre delivery inspection states: “Check battery charge and top up electrolyte level.” Certainly the latter may not be possible due to modern day battery design but the battery charge state is of extreme importance. Confirm the battery charge during every PDI with appropriate equipment. Simply running the engine for a period can be ineffective as the alternator is controlled by the engine ECU and may not have set the alternator to charge mode.

Should a new vehicle be stored at your premises, it is highly probable the battery will become discharged especially if the high-tension leads are allowed to remain connected.

Please in future and as a matter of routine, disconnect all batteries of new vehicles stored at your premises. Instigate procedures to make certain the battery of every new vehicle supplied to a new owner has a fully charged battery.

Your co-operation in this matter will be very much appreciated.

I have noticed recently that the steering seems to be incredibly sensitive on tight bends so much so it feels like the car is going to turn in on itself. Is this just typical or the fact I have winter tyres may play some part? It almost feels like I haven't been driving it as hard before as I hadn't noticed it until recently. Probably my old age and my brain shutting down.

MetaSAT seems to be working OK again now but they told me they were going to mnitor it and ring me in a week. Haven't heard anything from them since I posted the above message! Makes you wonder what you are getting for your money.

i had this problem with the Hatch after 1 year from new, AA dismissed the battery being dead, Subaru Assist took it to dealer who replaced battery with a new one, I was told to ask for a make beginning with V, they fitted this for me under warranty.

Good to know that Super Unleaded is available in Ullapool. We are having a week away near to Loch Broom a little later in the year, looking at those roads I will have to leave the hounds at home

You must take a trip north of Ullapool towards Kinlochbervie. Simply brilliant roads and scenery.
Not sure what way you plan to get to Ullapool, but the road from Inverness is good also. Especially if you take a detour via Achnasheen and Gairloch.
Enjoy

Thanks Tony, the car needs a set of flaps to keep down the stone and the tar marks, the missus is buying me some Rally Amors for my birthday. Also wouldn't mind a front mesh grill like yours. Who stocks those, Tony ?

It couldn't have been mine, Ted, the car was with Subaru all week for the 340 upgrade.

Tony, thanks for the info.

When I first saw the new saloon, particularly those fitted with the rear wing, I knew that I wanted one. I wasn't prepared to pay the £33k that they were asking at the time but now that you see 'nearly new' saloons with a few k on the clock advertised for £10k less, with two years warranty to run. Also I was offered the full 300 to 340 upgrade for £750, the rear wing at half price including spraying and fitting, front splitter thrown in for nothing and £19k for my hatch.
The hatch is a brilliant car but I couldn't resist this saloon in what I think is the best colour.
