Mine has a 1” long crack in the housing where the penny seals, so suspect that was why it didn’t make more. Still brilliant car to drive at those levels though, very impressive!

I have only seen a couple of VF43/48 that havent had the cracks tbh - doesnt stop them working great but can restrict the ultimate amount of boost from them at the top end. They can be possibly be repaired though.

Bit of welding and artistic grinding or new housing?

I agree, is very common on all VF's, so am not bothered. At least you mapped mine with the fault rather than it developing later!

I was lucky enough to come across a brand new unit so no cracks at the moment but after reading that the unit you have is only at 20k i am starting to regret choosing the VF48 over the 18G that will probably change once i have had it mapped

LJF, Cobra do a resonated centre in both 2.5 and 3 bore flavours. Check their site...

That's what I got. The 2.5 resented cobra centre section and cobra sports cat downpipe. Loud enough for me, sounds brilliant!

Well after chatting with my mapper today i will definitely be going for a meth mix map I am also debating on a fmic even though the tmic is more than capable of the power i will be running

Well it was mapped over the weekend and the end result was 341bhp-301torque with a slightly under 20% meth mix apparently my 2.5 system of prodrive sportscat, standard centre section and genome backbox is being very restrictive so i need to go 3" now.

Nothing against the 48 as it spools very well but I'd have a 34 any day of the week from the vf range.

I'd tend to disagree with this myself.

VF34 is fine and dandy but almost all are very old now and the VF48 is a cracking little unit with great spool up and response and top end power too.

Simple answer is to buy a new unit from the likes of AET and I have seen better top end power[marginal I will say] but a lot more torque[30-40lbs ft] in some cases which makes for a better pull from the 34.
Spool wise we are only talking 100's of rpms difference so very marginal and on the road I have driven both and the 34 felt a noticeable amount quicker.
In fact a 30/34/35 will all make better torque than 300lbs ft and the power is quite low especially on almost 20% meth mix.

Dont get me wrong i think the vf48 is a great turbo but i was expecting better results than that considering the meth mix. I thought the prodrive exhaust was only restrictive around 390-400bhp?

VF48 is nicely suited on 2.5L on 2.0STi or WRX its still laggy.

With VF48 its everything like lucky draw game, someone will make 380bhp and someone will not make 350bhp,your exhaust can be at this, but still think Prodrive backbox still is restricted, but maybe i'm wrong,if you have friend and i would swap backbox on day of mapping.

Lee, the Prodrive sportscat is no good for the sort of power you're looking for .

If you want 350bhp+ AND pass mot emissions you will need a proper 3" race cat from the likes of RCM, H&S or GGR (= expensive!). Even then it will need to be heatwrapped and will be borderline on emissions at much beyond the 350 mark.

The simplest/cheapest option at over 350 is to go decat and find a freindly mot tester. Then you will be able to realise the potential of the turbo and will get the results you're looking for .

I got 2.5” system with cobra 200 cel more restrictive sports cat downpipe, not wrapped, MOT friendly with my VF48 and seeing 334bhp & 381lb/ft torque.
