From: Leeds - It was 562.4bhp@28psi on Optimax, How much closer to 600 with race fuel and a bigger turbo?
TIG, also bought http://www.weldac.co.uk/new_products.htm but not from here...
I used www.westcoweld.co.uk
Edited to add, didnt buy an invertor, as not too bothered about the size of the box (welder
) and it was cheaper.

Welder at my dad's place is 15kw (yes, 15000 watts) and about 1 metre cube with a 2 foot cooling fan. Old technology though, which is really what makes it yhuge.
I take it this is a DC and AC suitable for tigging Al?

not that difficult, given practice.
about 10 rods worth should leave you able to weld moderate thickness 2mm + with reasonable success. Given that David has an understanding of the fundamental processes involved, and that he knows someone that can weld Al to show him the basics, I think it's reasonable.
Getting a decent steel topped bench is good start, fitted with a vice and a dedicated tab for the earthing clamp, or bolt the cable on using a heavy duty crimp (which it probably has anyway).
go to the library, search for info online and get stuck in mate

Fuzz, quite correct
and I appreciate there is a difference between producing welds that look okay, and wont fall apart, and producing welds that are actually good and strong. not that this is the DIY tig welding thread, but you get the idea.

Thanks for that Fuzz, you could have offered some advice on torch angle, shielding gasses, preperation, tungsten type, filler rods etc.

Mounted other solenoid and also ported headers a bit more.. they will be able to go back on tonight... Slowly getting there... will be ready for well Lane

Good lad. Silly question i know, but how will you get your car to Well Lane just out of interest.
Some pics tonight?
How long did you take to do the fuel pump? ie how long would it take you to do mine?

Oh yea...advice...that's what this BBs is all about really init
Hmmm, well,
If welding ally only use pure tungsten tips as other alloys such as thorium will contaminate the aluminium.
Thorium is used in tips to make it "start" easier.(but only on steel as mentioned).
dont know how you can set up your machine but,
dc for steel
ac for ally. (high frequency) and don't play about with it on high frequency as it'll arc up on wood

Grinding tips - grind end into stubby shape for aluminium and longer like a pencil for steel.
got me book out for the rest
memory is not what it used to be
must be all the fumes
some gidelines for :- Aluminium
material .current.Tungsten Diam.Rod Diam. Gas flow CFH.

you may well have to have a look at edit if the spaces don't stay where they are supposed to.
you know how clean things have to be to get a decent weld with MIG well for TIG you have to be able to eat your dinner off it
and lastly angle of attack is about 45 Degs (torch) if your a bit shaky after the boddingtons
rest the edge of the cupof the torch on the work piece but don't let the tip touch anything and then you can drag it along dipping the rod in with the other hand.
some people grow one fingernail slightly longer to rest the filler rod in (makes a nice groove).
Zat enough for ya
Andy.

I've found corners to be a pain with AL due to stubby electrode. So I stuck it out further and upped the gas a tad (about 2cfm more I think).
worked for me, but I guess fuzz might say I risked life and limb for an easy life!

David
David
There is usually at least one car trailer on Ebay if you wanted something for a more longterm plan if it is going to be a trackday car mainly.. usually around the 1000 mark although I have seen them in freeads for a lot less, you just need to be quick.
