That's possibly what the "industry" says to itself on a *** break, but it's not that simple. Nobody has "made" 14-17 year olds want instant gratification, it has always been the case, but these days, with computerised free music the norm, they are the audience who will dictate what gets heard the most. If they had to pay for their music like in the good old days then they would have far less of a say, and more taditional bands would flourish. The industry has changed forever, unless you can effectively restrict the supply of free online music. All IMO of course.

Ask ANY child who is internet-savvy, where do you get music, videos/multimedia etc? They will all say the internet..... with the expectation that it is just there. Ready for consumption.
The younger generation DO expect instant gratification with almost everything these days. Music (and the acquisition of) being no different.
The same is inherent in adults too - the "we want it now" crowd. No difference imho.
So, yes the public HAVE made "it" like it is today.

Because 14 -17 year olds download the most music. Obviously?
And no the public haven't made "it" like it is today, not unless you charge every teenager with having invented the internet. They're just taking advantage of the world as it is today, to the detriment of the music industry as a whole. Pretty simple stuff.

OK, I'll concede slightly that it's not just the youth of today. However, pre-14 and post-18 demographics shouldn't be ignored either, your 14-17s aren't the focus group any more. It's MUCH wider.
And with this wider focus, it is readily accepted that music acquisition is a seen as a freebie as it's just available on the Internet.
I'm not arguing this point from the stance of opinion, I'm arguing it from personal experience, therefore fact. I see it everyday.
Maybe the public haven't exactly made it like it is today, but they sure as hell haven't stopped it either, so therefore are complicit in its downfall.
As Charles Rosner (or Eldridge Cleaver) said, "If you're not part of the solution, you're part of the problem"
Pretty simple.
However, arguing over the semantics of who did what/where/when is immaterial (although, in this case, not to me)....... how do YOU, (the buying public) suggest developing stadium artists for the next generation to see? Or do you think it should die a death? A relic of the "good old days"?
