John. No, not obviously stronger, there are differences though but nothing that significantly changes much and all hatch boxes have the carbon coated synchro rings fitted as standard.
ALL UK supplied 6 speeds were dccd from WR1 onwards. These ones have a near as dammit 50 /50 split All hatch 6 speeders are 3.9 front 3.9 rear.

I'm guessing the post-WR1 UK DCCD ones are 45:55, right?
The gearbox kit as above is everything you need. Rear diff is extra at £350.00 + VAT [ £420.00 inc ] for a viscous R160 rebuilt / checked here. R180 rear diff with Suretrack - rebuilt / checked as above is £750.00 + VAT [ £900.00 inc ]
R180 3.9's are really hard to get these days and the price reflects the rarity value.

Whether we can do that depends upon the gearbox code you have. It ought to be TY 754 VBAAA :- if it is Type R or RA it will be VB1CA :- or VB1EA if it has helical front LSD fitted [ optional ]
Let me know what is wrong and code and l'll get a better idea of what to expect
Good Luck David

Similar in shape and size but not internally. The STI version will have 1.1:1 drop gears and a UK one will have 1:1 drop gears meaning that any swap will need a rear diff to match or the centre diff will break.

European/UK (as opposed to Japanese)Subaru have a rear diff ratio of 3.545 and a front diff ratio of 3.9 but the rear diff is driven through the centre differential which has a drop gear of 1.1:1 which converts the rear 3.545 diff ratio to a 3.899 final drive ratio. To all intents and purposes 3.9 front and rear.
Jap boxes have a center diff drop gear of 1:0:1 so diff ratios of 4.44, 4.11 and 3.9 are also final drive ratios.

So should I NEED a 6-sp in the future, and because I don't like "rear biased", then any pre-WR1 UK non-DCCD one, or any post-WR1 UK DCCD, would fit the bill, right?
I'm guessing the post-WR1 UK DCCD ones are 45:55, right?
How does the Suretrac differ to VC - how does it work? (I know how VC works). Does Suretrac 'feel' any different to VC?

Suretrack is a viscous with plates in rather than a viscous in the truest sense having just ' stiff oil' in it. Not easy to explain the difference in simple terms.
Suretrack is longer lasting as it less reliant on the fluid over long periods.
Whatever you do with a 6 speed, you will need a rear diff in that STi 5 as now that car is on 4.4 ratios. 6 speeders need a 3.9 or a 3.5 rear end.
Older non dccd boxes are failing with broken centre viscouses [ visci ? ] There is a small lightweight thrust washer in the gear set that spins and erodes, Once worn away the gears come apart and the main internal thrust washer breaks. Then you are 2 wd, We must have changed 10 or 12 so far this year for that very reason.
Dccd type would be safer even if you never connect the dccd.

Thanks David - feeling more confident re. the lowdown on 6-speeds now.
Great that the later UK DCCD are 49:51 (or at least further away from 45:55) -- me likey.
Moral of the story: to payout for as late a MY/youngest/lowest miles 6-sp. box/rear diff, as one's fund allows. Esp. the mechanical centre diff'd DCCD boxes. Right?
