thanks for all your advice everyone. noise seems to have got worse now, knocks on the first 2-4 seconds of start up and if i lightly accelerate to 4k rpm and hold it it will knock away quite happily and carry on up the rev range until i take my foot off the throttle then it vanishes.

popping to subaru in handley tomorrow just for final "yes its big ends" before i start looking at getting money together

Yeah, and keep driving it and it may put a conrod out the engine block wrecking it totally.

In its current state its repairable. It won't be when it spins a bearing shell and seizes.

Driving it 'til it stops' will cost you alot more money to fix, and it'll still leave you without a car to drive to work, a recovery fee from the side of the road. And according to sod's law, it'll fail at the most inconvenient time when you need the car most.

Just a warning - its your car in the end of the day.

The thing with big end knocks, its a audible sign of excessive clearance. Meaning oil is leaking out of that bearing and as a consequence starving the rest of the engine of oil flow (even if it still shows pressure on a guage).

I'm getting exactly the same noise on my 2006 WRX. Just as described by Daz - happens on a very light throttle and mostly once revs fall to 3,000-2,000 rpm (depending on gear). Time for an expensive trip to the dealer.
