Amazingly 5 speeds never use to be able to take 400bhp, actually they still cant take 400bhp (well its the torque that kills em ) so your just buying box after box after box then fitting a ppg kit and finding 5th gear goes (thats another box but you have spent 4k on the ppg build and 3 5 speeds), run a 6 speed and there is a much greater chance it wont break

ive owned a uk classic and now a jdm sti type r,there is no comparison which is the better car.
the sti feels much better in every way,my uk classic was running 315/320,my sti type r is standard and it feels as quick if not quicker, the sti is a much more exciting drive.
i wouldnt ever buy another uk car......although it is still a great car and pretty quick, and was also reliable,i soon got bored.
its individual opinions,i just think the gearing etc is much better.

There was a guy posted on here about 2 months back with his MY99 uk car, running 215bhp (totally standard car), 3rd gear totally stripped, (not abused too much either ) so it shows you, not a strong box at all if it cant take 215bhp and 214lbs of torque

Never seen the syncros go on one but it doesnt mean they wont, so 1 6 speed box we know of to 1000 5 speed boxes? thats not a bad ratio

yes the 6 speed do handle 400 plus very well.

newage wrx will and can take 400

as with both they can break at standard power.

friend of mine been running 5 speed andy 20g for bout 60k no issues car at 100k now.

api told him when first done the mods there taking upto 400 well and just wait till it breaks 60k later still going strong never had gear oil changed either used and abused

a 340 bhp type r would be a very quick motor indeed! a newage car will need alot more bhp to match the classic type r.

You know there is a slight difference between the 2.5 wrx gearbox and the 2ltrs?
Its not that they can take more power (they will still just let go, and I would get your mate to change the gear oil, you change it for a reason, mainly because it breaks down and stops lubricating very well and it takes any bits of metal out of the box to stop excessive wear).

I was speaking to Mike Latimar on Sunday, he uses Forester 6 speed ratios in his monster due to the longer gearing.....

As for the WRX Vs sti debate, i decided to sell my UK bug a few years ago after having a drive in a mates Blob STI.....in standard form there is no competition..

for how long you been on here/posts thought even you would be aware of this plenty posts.

i not saying that 6 speeds are s..t just they do have there faults and as you up the power you spend more time up and down the box.

5 speed just hold the gear out,why do top fuel dragsters use 3 speed etc why your changing gear your going nowhere

F1 cars use 7 gears, doesnt make much difference, the 6 speed is a much nicer box, you can miss gears out on it and not worry, do that with a 5 speed and pray it takes the strain
Oh and the quickest production subaru to date runs a 6 speed box, has the quickest 0-60 and 0-100 times, is heavier than a classic too! (and im not talking the cosworth, its not a production car) work that one out

yes fully aware as stated forrester 5/6 seems preferred choice.
early 6 speeds ratio between 4/5/6 is horrible ,more you up the power more you notice.

example long bend
wrx 5 speed hold 3rd
6 speed you will make 2 gear changes on the way round

yes mate, the type r running 340 would be much quicker unless the newage had around 380 bhp.
