Like it or lump it I am English and not British. However I will admit to being a British Citizen if this makes you feel any better.
Is that because you're secretly admitting you knew you were wrong all along, or because you finally decided to take a look at your passport and see what it says in the space for 'Nationality'?

OK, I agree that you can say you're English, but you're not officially English, you are British. We can all say we're from wherever, and I would say I am English, but my nationality is British as that's officially what I am.

Look at my wording!

Wurzel, you need to write to your MP or someone who cares, but even so, I don't think they're going change this one I'm afraid. It doesn't matter, an American is still an American even if he comes from California or New York.

Think they were individual at some point. Yugoslavia was the same though, people were Yugoslavian, not Slovenian, Croatian etc. until they split up. I'm sure there are other examples....

Again true about Yugoslavia but now they are seperate countries.

So what happens when the Jocks and paddies get de-evolved and have their own parliaments? Oh hang on they already do! They also want independence, so they get their wish and become indipendent do they suddenly become Scottish and Irish (which they already are) and we are left in limbo as we have no Official nationality?

Anyway I am going home now so ciao

It is called the United Kingdom of great Britain and Northern Ireland, but citizenship is simply "British". and your nationality is also "British".

This is the official line. English, Welsh, Scottish & Irish (Ulter) are meaningless in any official capacity except for stuff like football, rugby etc.

Quoted from the official Wales site

Wales is not a Principality. Although we are joined with England by land, and we are part of Great Britain, Wales is a country in it's own right.

On 18 September 1997, we voted in favour of devolution in Wales. Before that, we were run entirely by the UK government in London. We were then given the powers we need to make secondary laws that affect us by an act called the Government of Wales Act 1998.

In 2006, we expanded on this act and have gained more powers for our country with the Government of Wales Act 2006. Our government's document 'One Wales' refers to us as a country or nation in it's own right.

Therefore as a country we have a nationality and that nationality is English.

Britain is a collection of Countries, England, and Scotland, Wales is still a principality so doesn't count as a country but still has a nationality.

Then we have the United Kingdom which incorperates The island of England and Scotland aswell as the island of Ireland which in itself is 2 seperate nations but for argument sake we will call them all Irish, and a few sundry other islands dotted round the place. We are not British unless you want to be for ease and being ashamed to say you are English, bearing in mind you are from Northampton I can understand why

I am English, I was born in England, my nationality is English, not Scottish, Irish, Welsh or British.
Show us your passport, if you have one I bet its British......Oh and Wales is a country, its in the United kingdom of great Britain and Northern Ireland

If his mother is Welsh, and he was born (registered) in Wales, and lives in Wales, then I would be happy to say he is welsh.
I am in his situation, born in Wales, not too far from Chirk. Welsh mum, English dad, but I would never consider myself english.

I see, so the Welsh Assembly calls themselves a country in a document they have written. Ask for any Welsh person's passport to see just how valid that statement is!

Is Wales recognised by the UN? Can you apply for Welsh citizenship? I think not.......

Can you apply for English citizenship? I think not either.........

Any Welsh persons passport will state the nationality as British, as would any English or Scottish person....... so that doesn't really prove anything now does it?

But the original question asked what nationality he would be and he would be British whether born and raised in England, Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland. Nationality is an official thing, affinity to a certain country is different!

on this "nationality" milarky, I often thought why Irish would rather call themselves Irish, not British. Welsh also hate being called anything but Welsh, Scottish like to be called just scottish, not British. In fact, their official and collective nationality is British whether they like it or not. In another fact, they can just about digest being called British <tilts upside down palm to both sides>, if they have to. But if you referred any Welsh, Irish or Scottish as English by mistake or by ignorance, consider yourself dead.

What's all that about in current century, then?

If that's the official Wales site, then I have to point out that they are officially illiterate.

The word "its" does not take an apostrophe.

Clarebabes, There was a British Rugby League team, about 3 years back they decided on an English and a Welsh team instead.
Giggs played for England schoolboys as he went to school in England. This has nothing to do with nationality. He never qualified to play for England as he was born in Cardiff and both parents and all grandparents were born in Wales.

If I'd been any good my situation was the opposite, born in England to an English lineage but moved to Wales at aged 3 and was schooled and lived there until I was 25.

Lived in Chirk for several years as a kid, went to school there. It's right on the English border and the maternity part of the hospital there has long since gone. I'd hazard most people there go into Oswestry for a night out, which is in England. Knowing what I do of Chirk I suspect everyone is mad Welsh, and your mate wants to be different.

For what its worth I count myself as from Wales but support England. I'm really confused

The Continent of America may well be made up of 35 countries but is split up into North America and South America but the Country of America is one country made up of 50 states all of which are America so Clares analogy is still pointless.

But on a different note isn't it good to have an interesting debate on SN where no one has slagged anyone off, insulted anyone or mention the Asian members of a certain religion
