205 GTI 1.6- certainly had character, at a time when fuel injection was taking over from twin carbs and exhaust note was not seen as a priority by most manufacturers.

Also, always nice to hear a fantastic sound in an 'everyday' car not a supercar, so thumbs up to Audi RS4, Focus RS etc, but my favorite is the Gallardo - reminds me of the Formula 1 V10 era.

Nobody's mentioned any diesels (with good reason), but comparitively, the TDV8 and the Audi V8 can sound good.

Get yourselves in a decent sized boat with big engines. Hear them roar and then claim diesels can't sound good.

All four pots sound cack, some six pots sound quite nice, some eights are fairly good and the V10 diesel by VW sounds positively thunderous.

I love the sound of my RS4. Just wish I could take my ears off and hang them off the rear bumper whilst I'm driving it

Otherwise the Pagani Zonda noise just makes me

You owned the old, lower powered 535d with a gay exhaust and cr4p gearbox and clearly never learned to drive it properly. A 335d and a 3.0TDI Audi both sound fairly good. Many journos agree.

A a big marine diesel sounds pretty awesome.

A car with a decent chassis is a bit pointless for our Mr Bell, regardless of engine type. Looked at used S6 prices recently? Yes they drop like a stone. Wonder why?

Ever heard of Car Magazine?

You can tell it’s a diesel at tickover but it’s exceptionally quiet with almost no vibration through the control surfaces. At speed, it’s silken. You don’t even have to suffer downturned exhaust pipes any more – the 335d has two chromed cans on either side.

And the 535d is a lot more muted compared to this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YnKNH...feature=relmfu

We'd get on if you could just enthuse about your car NOT AT THE EXPENSE of others. Your constant "my S6 is great, oh the 535d is crap" waffling is rather tiresome. Yes your S6 is faster but it doesn't handle as well - I will keep telling you this until you stop bashing them. Oh and tell us once more about your "new oak barn" etc - somethings not right is it Alan? You feel a bit insecure don't you? You think we'll all worship you and your battleship?

Sorry but the truly successful Trout and a few others here manage to enthuse without boasting, manage to compare without patronizing.

You have all the emotional intelligence and social skills of a dog turd in a swimming pool. Until you realise that, I'll keep on at you.

On the subject of BMW Diesels, are the cabins not tuned to make them sound a bit more sporty than the engines actually are?

Probably.

Hey it's still a diesel but they still have the ability to cause minor hairs on neck pricklage, especially while slaying some muppet in a "hot" hatch

535d is quiet, it's got a totally anonymous sound despite the polished exhaust tips put on to give oil burning a sporty/bourgeois respectability.

Doesn't sound too far off a 246 Dino.. which I love..

Bet it drives a bit different though!

I loved the AJP v8 for pops and bangs, engine sounded awful on tickover though but nice through the gears

Best 4 for me is a toss up between these two..
