Duckhams Q20/50 you got plenty of froth in oil filler cap, ok for the lawn mower maybe.
If you phone Subaru dealers and check which oil they use you will find many use semi synthetic and others a fully synthetic and they will defend using the semi synthetic. So it must meet the required spec.
Has anyone used a semi synthetic which caused their engine to fail?

Unless you put an oil in that is nothing like the right oil, eg hydraulic oil in an engine, any problems from using a less than ideal oil will take a while to show.
Subaru don't specify that the car needs to use a mineral, semi or full synthetic, just a 10w-40, or in newer cars, a 5w-30. A synthetic oil gives better protection than a mineral or semi synthetic, so using a full synthetic is a step up in protection. I see that as a pretty important thing with turbo cars, the engines work hard so better protection helps to prevent engine wear and failures. The extra cost of a synthetic (say £20 per oil change) is pretty small compared to the cost of serious engine repairs.
Cheers

Done 46,000 miles and still going strong.....runs on 10w-40 magnatec nowadays. Probably a bit thin for hard driving in summer, but for local use it suffices fine, maybe if it was driven hard I'd go for a 10w-50.
Maybe its durability is due to a pitiful 295BHP being shared out between 12 cylinders and a heavily nitrided crank. I don't ever recall a Jag V12 knackering its crank journals. There is something in that, an Impreza with just 4 journals having to share 250+ BHP between them; something has to give.

I hope it is all OK and not too expensive. Have you had the car long? I'm new here and was really sad to hear what happened to your car.

The old man's 1982 XJ-S V12 ran on Duckhams 20w-50 from new, later on it ran on QXR.

FWIW my old Impreza has ran on Magnatec semi-synth 10W40 since I bought it, and continues to do so under its current owner on 6 month oil change intervals. I believed the dealer used Helix semi-synth before I owned it. It was a MY97 though.

Yep Maf failure
Well picked engine up Saturday damage was a heavily worn big end bearing, replaced crank, bearings and cons.
Fitted it today and fired first time no trouble,
I must say I will be taking my future scoobys to David at Api there attention to detail is amazing I could have stayed all day just chatting to the staff.
The whole package was a bargain and I am happy with the outcome. Now just a little trip to the mappers and she will be sorted. As for the causes to the damage at the start I think it was just a coinsadance and my luck

My Blob eye was fine, 39000 miles, friday full service, quick run out then on rollers for 3 runs, didn't get the car back as the engine is knocking! and they say it's big ends. getting the car back here tomorrow.
They use the oil they used in mine on loads of scoobies and had no problems.
I will find out what oil they used as this is interesting reading and will post on here what they used.
Had the car 2 weeks and reading this and how sensitve the engines appear to be I'm wondering if I did the right thing buying one
Regards
Paul

The engine doesn't make that much noise but it is on it's way out so just sitting on my drive for now.
It was defo on it's way out already as once the oil was changed it was just run round the block then 3 runs on the rollers and the dyno picked a knock up and retarded the ignition I guess because it was 15 bhp down from the previous run. then I noticed the knock when I left so went straight back.
They checked it out and found big end failure.
driving around my trusty FTO till it gets fixed

Don't forget oil & filter change at 1000 miles up to 4000 rpm til then and low boost.
Good Luck David APi
