I would say so, but not much. You might be better getting a sports cat & mating that to the standard exhaust or I can thoroughly recommend a Milltek exhaust, very subtle!

my plan was to straight away have it mapped using a simtec or similar for uk fuel,but had to replce clutch and flywheel,so its gone on hold now,anyone got any opinions on the standard exhaust setup and simtec? keeping the car quiet?

hmmm,it would seem a bit silly to spend out on a simtek with very little gains other than the safer uk fuel map.
alan said it was running well,and to run it on v power,i want the gains but not the noise,i wouldnt want it any louder than the oe system as i find the road noise in the type r is loud enough.

Friend of mine just put a revolution on his wagon and it is very quiet with the standard dp. I suggest it would be equally as quiet with the sports cat

As I said I would get it mapped with a Sports cat or like and just make it the best it can be on good servicing and a happy engine map, be that simtek or whatever

if i put a spotscat downpipe on and kept the rest of the oe system on,what sort of power/torque could i expect? would the walbro pump be needed?,only after 300-330bhp.

If yours has 440 injectors and you fit a pump (I would ) you can expect 300 from a sports cat and a factory system as long as the only cat is the SPorts cat Limiting factor is the I/C but you don't want anymore power than that IMHO in car where preservation is the order of the day

Simtek is the best value if yours can't be ecutek'd or ESL'd

i didnt think 98 cars can be ecutekd?
mine is a 1998 v4 but has the facelift dash(but not front end),white dials etc.
i think 300+ in a type r would be pretty quick imo.
surely if i left the centre cat in place this wont be too restrctive?

As I understand it there are some late 98's that can be els'd/ecutek's if they got early 99 ECU's so it's worth checking what you have

Most mappers will do it, with the facility for maf delete IIRC.

ok so what am i looking for on ecu? is it in the passenger footwell?

Is your coilpack in the middle of the inlet manifold?

What about a 2nd hand power FC?

Simtek is a great ECU. I've had both & the Simtek wins due to deleting the MAF in my book.

so i assume it cant be ecutekd or anything else which would be cheaper?
i didnt think the v4 had the fragile maf as its not the same as a99 maf.its a larger unit.

no think its about 875 all in.

Deffo no Ecutek on 98MY at the minute. You are limited to Simtek, Power FC or another ECU - 53Wrx is right about the ESL daughterboard, that might be a cheaper option although personally I'd go for the PFC if I could get one cheap enough, otherwise the Simtek would be my first choice.

ok,is it essential to have the commander with it or is this an optional thing?(excuse my lack of knowledge!)or can you just get the ecu?
also would the ecu on my car be a 3 plug?

Tx I appreciate that and alot have let go but again I say this without tempting fate but i have had 5/6 classics only one with a forged block all ranging from 250-350bhp and all have been fine, maybe I am one of the lucky ones as some people buy it and a week later it goes pop

My point is that you have no way to say a yes or a no!!!

Standard to mildly to highly tuned blocks can let go regardless of care and maintaince it's just luck of the draw i guess for me and my experience at 320-340 mapped well and looked after and you should be fine. Although as tx has said keep in mind that one day it may happen and that's as is now or if you mod it

Got a power fc without comander 320 quid and got mapped by Rich @ FB tuning, The cheapest option for u my friend. ESL for 97/98 cars are still not ready....unfortunately...Simtec is much better ecu , but more pricy and as long as u not going for big build is not nescesary IMO... Was running the car unmapped for almost 3 years, always on v power thought, no big issues... Except rear diff wining which started not long ago......easy fix thought..
Oh and the car is 113k miles with shy 320/310 ....

but back to cars, its just the luck of the draw. you can get a brand new one and it dies 1 mile after u pick it up, but then again u can collect it and neglect it and u never have any trouble with it

id be more worried about the gear box with the extra torque than the engine
