I think most people on this particular forum have lost someone close. It is, imo, stupid to think of a higher being or a super natural state that a certain person can communicate with.

There is no science for it.

 

agreed, there is no scientific proof for it at all but i personally found that it helped me through the grieving process, i had no interest in it before he died and i have no interest in it now we're 3 years on, people do alot stupider things when they're in an emotional state than to think that they can communicate with a dead loved one

 

It was always just, in my opinion. If it can help you through the grieving process, then great.

If it helps you mentally deal with it, obviously, go for it

 

It is understandable that going to a medium or alike may offer the bereaved some relief. But one is never certain whether medium is definitely talking to the lost loved one or not. That is why a lot of people would see it as an unethical trade, where service provider may be encashing on service user's desperation and vulnerability, using white lies to heal the pain. Saying that, if customer is ready to be in denial to the posibility of lies in order to gain some relief, that's fine, too. I agree with Claire's saying that some would do more stupid things than going to the medium in a grief-striken emotional state. Some grief-struck people commit suicide, some self-harm, some indulge into alcohol, and some get into substance misuse. For some, one trip to a medium can save that gradual deterioration, reliable or not. So, there is a justification to such practice from another angle, fair enough.

Interesting topic. I expect some people will have had some more positive experiences but dare not say so due to the high proportion of negativity surrounding the subject. I may have had my opinion changed massively recently, but have done so in such a way as it will be proven beyond doubt to be true. Will try and pop on later to explain!

People willingly hand over good money to see Paul McKenna, and I would say it's certain a significant proportion of them also believe his abilities go beyond those of a mere illusionist (albeit a very polished and talented one). What's more, NONE of his publicity or promo material attempts to dispel the mystique over how he manages to perform his tricks or stunts, and in fact a lot of it seems to actively encourage the belief, suspicion or presumption that he has supernatural powers of one kind or another. So, does that make him a paedophile? Have you protested to Channel4 to have him taken off the air and arrested?

 

Now I understand why this country is going backwards..

 

Most of the experts say the desire or even need to believe in some higher power is pretty deeply rooted in the human psyche, going back a long way before recorded history, so it's not that surprising stuff like this is popular as it is, with the void left by the massive decline in organized religion.

Think how many people read horoscopes in the paper every morning and actually believe there might be some truth to it. It boggles the mind how anyone could, but thousands upon thousands regularly do.

 

Like I say, I am in a pretty unique position to be able to decide factually on what level of "Abuse" I recently experienced. We will see...

I didnt say I was interested in convincing anyone else, only relaying an intersting story. I have witnessed a live medium turn a relative of mine, an old lady, to tears with a piece of information that NOBODY, including me, could have guessed, and I have made it my business to find out factually if this information was correct. Like I say, its a long story so I will try and write it out in an understandable manner later.

 

Don't really have a massive opinion on this but...

Why do "shows" that charge punters if it's really genuine? I think this is a case of the mind creating justification as it's desperate for answers. You know, the old "Is there a Brain here..." no answer "Doe's anyone know a Brian" no answer "wait a minute... it's coming through clearer... does anyone know a Ryan" ... hands goes up and away it goes.

I would be interested in hearing your story Stu, as I am a non believer just due to the leading questions they ask and the way they go about it generally...maybe there are a few who can really see but these are sadly tarnished by those who pretend.

I remain unconvinced by the majority but if it can be proven I would like to hear more.
