Most of us use our bikes instead of our cars, so should actually be getting a refund

If a cyclist banged on the side of my car then I think I would have responded in the same way as the van driver.
Although I would have given the cyclist more room in the first instance so the above would probably never needed to have occurred.
But what does annoy me about cyclists is that there no need for them to have road tax, there is no compulsory insurance requirements, and there is no safety requirements apart from that of a helmet.
They use the road just as we drivers do, yet they pay nothing towards the up keep of the road etc etc.
But its seems they feel as though they own the road. They feel as though they have a right to occupy more road than us drivers. They also have more rights as a cyclist if you go by the highway code.
I am surprised the government have no started some form of cycling tax!
Not all cyclists, and drivers are the same so it would be unfair to tarnish them with the same brush. But in all fairness, the majority of cyclists I have been unfortunate enough to encounter have acted like complete *****!

I think the cyclist had a fair point. It looked as though the van driver was in danger of cutting across the cyclist at first when he shouted, It would have worried me. The van driver then overtook and squeezed the cyclist with the cars parked on the roadside. The whole affair was unnecessary anyway and could have been easily avoided with a bit of patience and consideration.

All cyclist should be forced to wear helmets (controversial I know), wear lights and reflective clothing all year round (not just winter), be required to sit a proficiency and highway code knowledge test and perhaps be required to be insured, certainly against damage to 3rd parties.
The government is trying to encourage cycling for health reasons, not erect barriers. Someone who does a couple of leisure rides a year with kids, or uses their bike to pop to the shops is not going to be interested in getting insured, licensed, registered, special clothing, exam, etc.
these people have to be catered for as well as those who are commuters / hard core cycle enthusiasts.

I think part of the problem is that cyclists are perceived as a lower form of life, the example sof this van driver and D4N OK.... show that, how dare that mere cyclist adress me, the driver of a Vauxhall Movano no less....
Cyclists arent all on bikes because they are too poor and stupid to drive a car, a lot of Van Drivers cant understand why anyone would choose to ride a bike, they dont understand it, find them annoying and react badly, Perhaps they also see it as smug middle class *****.
I do think the cyclist in the video was int he wrong, but no excuse for the van driver to get so agressive so quickly, he may pick on the wrong cyclist and as soon as a driver gets out of a car ina confrontation they loose the 2 tonne of metal advantage, as D4N soon realised.

No-one has mentioned the equivalent of an MOT for cycles, brakes checked annually etc.
@scoobyride, city streets, country lanes, yes. But there are plenty of residential cul-de-sacs where kids cut their teeth on cycles. Not necessary to have any training to cycle there, extension of a garden more than a road. car drivers should be ultra cautious.

The debate is for the road users! Anybody taking kids out on bikes uses parks etc as what cleary happens on the roads is totally dangerous for cyclists whatever way you look at it. There should be designated areas for cyclists only if there isnt enough cycle lanes etc then pay to use the road like everybody ealse simples
- Less accidents for cyclists on roads as there for pedestrians on the paths.
- Road maintenance is paid for out of general taxation, as there is no such thing as road tax

Was coming back from Glencourse (hills, you might know 'em) when a couple of horsey gals screamed at me to go slow as I went past. Turned out the last cyclist had whizzed by and spooked the horses.
We're all the same, after all!

I always give cyclists plenty of room as I used to do allot myself so understand the problems and after all a little courtesy costs nothing...white van men I just shove out the way, mine you I do have a 2 tonnw 4x4 to use lol.

I stay away from the pentlands at the weekend as it's so busy with walkers (unless you are really early in the morning) it just isn't worth the hassle and frequent abuse you get from walkers and horsey folk.
I'll always slow right down for horses and in summer, I remove my shades as apparently the skittish ******* get spooked when they can't see your eyes !

I think on this occasion the cyclist is a c0ckput himself in that situation. He should have anticipated what the van was doing and rather than try and assert himself against a 2.5 ton van. The sensible thing would have been hold back and to let the van past at the junction. I'm of the opinion that vehicles such as a van will have right of way since they have blind spots, take longer to stop, harder to take avoidance action and above all can to more damage. Rather do that than try and compete with a large vehicle to make a point.
