I see that the scientists are right. Pets are great stress relievers.
Look at the calm, measured posts from our ardent pet owners. A better advert for keeping domesticated pest controllers I haven't seen. I am off to buy me a doggy.

It's all very well insuring your pet for millions of pounds, but would you still be covered if you have modified your pet?
My alsation (MY97) has been on steroids since the age of two and I have had all his teeth platinum capped. I also dyed him pearlescent green but have not informed the insurance company of any of these modifications. Will my insurance company still pay out in the event of a claim?

Much as it pains me, I agree with Richard "the animals friend" Askew. I am not an animal lover, other than as a source of sustenance, but I can understand how people get defensive about their pets and their pets "rights". However, in MY OPINION, by having a pet you acquire certain obligations, so why shouldn't you be sued for negligence. Again,IN MY OPINION, if it came down to a choice between ANY animal and a child, sorry but the animal looses every time. I would not deliberately kill an animal with my car (shooting them is a different matter) but neither would I endanger myself, my passengers or other road users to avoid one.

I realise this probably makes me some form of inbred,halfwit (apologies to anyone who is) who can't formulate a structured argument, but it is my opinion. Wibble.

I can see where you're coming from and have no problem with your post.

I also agree that owners of certain animals such as dogs have responsibilities. I prefer cats myself and should one be unfortunate enough to run across the road and get runover then thats hard luck. If the person who did it had been driving recklessly thats a different matter. If the person who did it didn't stop and I saw them they would need a new car one day after a short time. If the person who did it had the attitude of our good friend that would also be the case. If they said look mate I'm sorry, it ran out there was nothing I could do then fair enough.


To animal lovers these pets are part of the family, whether the non-animal lovers can understand that or not. If you get some a-hole coming up to you after killing your family pet member whinging about his scratched paint he IS gonna get some cumuppence. Surely you can identify with those feelings?

Its not the hypothetical incident so much as the hypothetical attitude after it that wound me up personally.

Rubbish. I have pets, but you have to be sure that stopping is safe - and in a lot of situations it isn't. If I hit a dog, or a larger animal I would most certainly phone the police. But from some of the comments (including Reidy's - the police often do nothing about it!!!).

Blind bends, country roads, highways ... neither of which have hard shoulders to stop in. If you stop you could cause further accidents with motorists coming from either direction - especially on busy back roads. That was my point. If I hit a dog or larger, I would find a suitable place to pull over and phone the police.

As a dog owner I'd like to add my thoughts to this.

To answer the original question, you have a legal obligation to stop if you hit a dog and report it to the police.

I consider that you also have a moral obligation to stop and see how badly injured or not the dog (or any other animal)may be.

Now, I cannot ******* believe some of the sh$t posted on here [img]images/smilies/mad.gif[/img].

Unless you are a vet, how the **** do you know whether or not the dog is too badly injured to be saved? As for putting it out of its misery ????? I cannot believe this attitude [img]images/smilies/mad.gif[/img]

My dog is chipped and has a collar on at all times when outside. I take every effort to ensure she can never get into a situation where she could get run over. But accidents do happen, and dogs can get away from their owners from time to time.

If someone hit my dog in such circumstances and didn't stop, or worse still went back to "finish the job" then I would not be responsible for my actions if I ever found out who did it.

I would, however, be happy to pay for any loss and damages if that person did stop - having said that my dog is insured for about £1,000,000 of third party liability.

Indeed, given the number of dogs that are now insured, it would make commercial (as opposed to legal and moral) sense to stop and report it.

On two occasions I've been in the unfortunate position to be behind cars that have hit a cat and a dog respectively. On both cases my wife and I ended up taking the animals to the vet because the everyone else involved was standing around scratching their heads and wondering what to do because they were typically human

So I told them where I was talking the animals, gave them my name and number as a witness and advised they call the police.

Unfortunately the cat died, but at least it was put out of its pain and not, as it had been before we intervened, left dragging its paralysed body along the pavement by its front legs, utterly terrified and confused as to why it couldn't walk.

Try and picture that, all you fcuckwits without a care [img]images/smilies/mad.gif[/img] Its owners later called and thanked me profusely for helping and at least they then knew what happened to their beloved pet.

The dog wasn't moving, looked dead, but was only in shock and had a broken leg. It was soon in perfect health and back with its family. I can only be thankful that it wasn't some of the posters on here that were in my position.....

Richard, on a lighter note, if ever I accidentally run you over, don't be too upset if I don't stop Or return to finish the job...

If so, then fine, I retract my comment. If not, then you are not qualified to decide what is serious and what isn't. And certainly not qualified to play god.

If you have an issue with the way your post is construed, then re write it, don't go whingeing about it .

Agreed, in some cases its clear, but too big a grey area to generalise. I was referring to dogs and cats.

Bigger animals suffer less from fatal crush injuries than smaller ones. Hitting my dog would be like hitting a small adult.

Contary to advertised "fact" most people, even kids, survive impacts with cars.

I have NEVER gone for violence before but I agree with astraboy.
You run over my cat and display that attitude you would pay.

Also, chances are you'll be speeding with that hot head of yours. Does that mean the dog owner can then sue you, or would that not be fair for poor little richie woo woo. I'm interested to know what you would do if you hit an animal because you were travelling too fast?


Also, you don't like people comparing a human life with an animal life, and then you rub salt into the wounds by trying to make out a piece of metal is more important than an animal life also. Sad

Reminds me we hit a dog on the mway in Greece at 75mph 8 years ago on holiday in a hire car-took its head right off, but the bodywork was fouling the tire so we had to bend it back into shape after stopping a couple of mile down the road. The engine bay was flecked with a rather fetching blood and gristle mix, if i remember rightly.

Spent much of the rest of the holiday laughing about it really...in between the beach, the bars and ******** the girls.
