Lamb is now £5.99 / KG in 2008 it was £3.79 / KG and this New Zealand Lamb so it eats grass out side and isnt effected by the rise in the price of grain for animal feed some one is exploiting us!

Jeez - we probably spend 200+ a week. Do you have small people who look like humans but eat like locusts in your house? Some people call the 'kids,' but a baby goat couldn't eat that much.

Lozgti1 - Maybe it is time she learned to use the cheaper cuts. Shin is good (a quid a kg) but you have to cook it for 2 days before you can eat it. Chuck it in the pot with a couple of onions for 5 minutes, add 2 cans of Guinness, tomatoes, carrots, parsnips and a few mushrooms. Boil the **** out of it for at least a day (two to make it tender), and serve with mashed spuds containing at least 30% butter and a good helping of salt. Not that healthy, but tastes sublime

There's me and the Mrs who is expecting our first child in March. Obviously having kids makes food shopping more expensive but how can spend say £200 a week on food alone when say Dave (Corradoboy) feeds his family of 4 on a quarter of that?

Do you have a rugby team to feed or what I'd go bankrupt if I forked out that much on just food Infact seeing how much we get for our outlay it Woukd all go off anyway as there would be nowhere to put £200 of food a week

Stewing lamb is excellent. With dumplings.

And yes, your local butcher is much better value. Use 'em or lose 'em.

Another shopper spending just £50 a week here. Only in asda though. Try tesco or sainsburys and expect that figure to be nearer to £80!

2 years ago we could often get by on £35 a week.
Only reason it is going up is the cost of transport.
To those of you that spend £100+ a week, you're obviously not looking for the bargains!

I may try an experiment next time we go shopping. Typically she will buy mince and diced turkey. I'll have bellypork and sometimes a steak. All from Asda. So next time I'll price it up but buy it from our butchers instead. See what both the price and taste comparison is. If it's nigh on identical price wise with a better taste I will be converted. If it's a lot more expensive I'll continue to buy the 'crap' from the supermarkets

Not really, my missus gets the bargains aswell, bogof etc. Thing is we prefer the more expensive quality brands as you can tell the difference no matter what anyone says. Tesco finest white Belgian chocolate cake is lovely but expensive .Alot of stuf is pre prepared so saves time as we both work full time so the last thing you wanna do is make a lasagne from scratch. End of the day, you're a long time dead so if you can afford it enjoy life while you can

Me and the g/f spend about £70-£80 for a 'main' shop (Tesco), this lasts us nearly two weeks, but then we normally do a 'top up' shop after a week or so for the essentials which is usually £20ish. We probably spend around £200 a month on food.

Sometimes we go to the local butcher, granted the quality of the food is better. Initially you think things are more expensive i.e. 4x chicken breasts in Tesco is £x and its more in the butchers for 4x but we find the size of the dam things are nearly twice that of the Tesco rubbish so you actually end up getting more.

Plus, if you buy chicken breasts in the supermarket, they've taken off the 'mini fillets', which they then sell separately, at a premium. And you never get two breasts the same size in a pack (should I have put that sentence in here? ). Got to a butcher and get them to joint a whole chicken.

Not true. Pak Choi is never on offer!

I like to eat fresh fruit and veg and happily pay for it.

Prawns, 4 chicken breasts, 2 bits of salmon, and maybe some beef for a stew - 12 quids worth of anyones money.

Usually spend £10 a booze too, and maybe some cleaning/toiletries....but don't get much change from £100.

I'm sure I could do it cheaper.....but I like what we eat, and don't want to cut back.

...stil going up the shop tonight for some sweets and a beer!

being serious - if you're buying mince try the Veggie alternatives; you might find you like 'em and God knows they're much cheaper than the meat ones.

I'd recommend Realeat or the Sainsburys own brands, add a bit of stock and see how you get on... if the meat version is too expensive it's worth trying something else.

I can definately say the meat he sell is very tasty If you were closer I would have a bucket load off you. I tend to find it cheaper to buy meat from the likes of Costco or Makro. You feel like your paying more cause you buy more but its cheaper and much better quality.

I'm 6'2" and about 18st. The missuse is 5'7" and a svelte 9st size 10 (normally, just had baby), and our 3yo is normal sized. Our 3wo only drinks milk thus far.

When I cook mince from my butcher I drain off no fat, but the odd time I have used supermarket stuff there is about 1/4 of a jam jar of fluid to pour away (I keep the old fat to give to the birds in winter). The end result for the supermarket is that by trying to add 10% to their profit margins, they have lost me as a customer forever. Obviously though, there are still enough idiots with no idea or interest in the quality of what they're eating to keep them going.

Oh, had a lovely salmon fillet with garlic and herbs tonight, with some veg, topped with a drizzle of balsamic vinegar and lemon juice.
