A reminder of Apples innovations

My wife asked me for an MP3 player this morning – to help with running and marathon training
We actually have a brand new boxed IPod shuffle (generation 1) in a draw in our office – but I had visions of having to load iTunes, profile, permission issues (needs admin rights) –, endless “services” needed, apple phone home spyware, media format incompatibility, battery charging issues
So I said – I will buy you an MP3 player – plug in, drag, drop, done

"Innovation" comes from the Latin word "innovare". Innovare dates back to at least 1540 and stems from the Latin innovatus, pp. of innovare "to renew or change".
So, you can innovate without inventing anything new at all, (which of course applies quite nicely to Apple, who seem to have built their entire company on nicking ideas from other people)

Not to be picky, but the word innovation does not just mean new ideas. It can also mean finding new ways of using existing ideas.

yes really, why dont you try believing less of the urban myth's and more of the actual facts. Its not your fault that you have believed the myth that has been dragged out over the years , lots of people have been sucked in.
Anyway whilst you are allowing me to play, read this.

Written by a Mac lover (like you seem to be). Surprising that the majority of people disagree with him isn't it?
By your reckoning one bloke says "never happened" despite the evidence then of course, it didn't, David Irving must love people like you.
Now, from your own link, the company was one that was in a lot of trouble. Investors and users only wanted to hear the Microsoft Office would work on the Mac and for whatever reason, Microsoft bunged them a wedge whilst commiting to ongoing development of the software. That sounds like a saving grace to me no matter how that bloke tries to spin it.
Now Swiss. I don't mind your joke threads and normally you come across as a decent chap but your response was plain rude and responded to in an appropriate manner.

Cough, a little bit earlier

Followed by the HTC
Apple did actually make a concept for a touchscreen phone (not a mobile, a regular landline phone) way back in 1984!

Now I have been around long enough to remember the initial investment and how ever it was spun by the press, industry etc, the fact remains that whilst the company was in dire straits, the money microsoft invested was not without a second agenda. In fact before the advent of the app store and iphone developers, the largest group of mac developers outside of Apple were actually at Microsoft. The two companies have had a long entwined history and it would be a foolish man who thought that Apple survived because of MS.

Now maybe I should have put a wink or a smilie after it, but frankly you were wrong and I stated that. In hindsight I should have tempered my reply with some flowery prose but hey ho ![Big Grin](images/smilies/biggrin.gif)

As you say, the companies were close at the start, IBM gave Gates a company but a computer without packages dies. Microsoft had the Windows tie up on PCs, they didn't need Apple. Apple however needed MS and their programming. Without that they would have sunk.
Its like Betamax v VHS or HD DVD v Blu-Ray. No point making the kit if the developers aren't writing for it and given the size of Apple's market v PCs at the time it wouldn't have been worth MS developing for it they did it because Gates let them. Apple wouldn't be here without him.
I don't even like the way his company has done business but there you go.
Flowery language and emoticons not needed, just a bit of prose and a properly developed arguement that extands beyond one word will do chap.

The simple fact remains, even die hard techies have trouble congratulating Apple for their achievements, isn't that a sad state of affairs? What's wrong with you people, negativity never achieved anything worthwhile.

Ignoring or masking over failings, omissions or potential problems on a grander scale can be catastrophic though. I'm thinking about our economy here moreso than Apple, who are currently lucky to have good PR and a loyal fanbase. ![Wink](images/smilies/wink.gif)
The day I'll worship Apple is when they are first on the mass market with a pocket sized smartphone with a battery that really does last 400hours in the real world.
Or come up with a viable (and cheaper) alternative to Sky TV....That really would be innnovative. I mean, Apple knocking Murdoch off the top spot in the media industry, that could be a real game changer.

But they didn't do anything new, even find a new way of using an existing thing, except persuade the gullible that a fancy case was the most important part of an electronic device. Any innovations from Apple rest solely in their marketing department.
