Has the high cost of fuel ...
I'll accept being a fraction of a second slower in 1% of situations as I am saving ££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££ ££££'s per year

I beg to differ ... the pull of my diesel is 340Nm at 1500 - that's more than enough thrill factor for anyone used to the pull of a turbo engine!!
Nah, I'm enjoying my Diesel - throw in the enormous cost advantage and it's a no-brainer IMO.

A modern diesel would be comparable to an old Classic with nothing done, running at bog standard bhp, A Classic 2000 for example was 0-60 in i think around 6 secs @ 215bhp, im sure ill get shot down for stats being wrong there

Yeah, but a new STi costs £27,000 - drinks fuel at a rate of less than 20mpg - costs £950 Road Tax for the first 12 months - and loses value faster than yesterdays Newspaper!!
For that 1% of the time you can actually use whatever extra power it offers over a modern diesel?
Nah - the sensible money doesn't go to the Subaru .....

No it certainly does'nt. But these cars tend not to be owned by people looking for a premium investment mate. I for one am ever more concious of the cost of fuel, but its relavent. Impreza's burn fuel like its going out of fashion, because they are a performance car of a high order, a Diesel Honda...is not, not in any language.
Nice i'm sure, but a certain kind of nice, just like an Impreza, which for many is a marmite car.....
When its an issue, sell the car. You lose money on everything these days.

Since when was owning a Subaru sensible?
I'm pleased that there are still eccentrics willing to continue purchasing Subaru Impreza's - despite the huge cost, they still stick to the Marque.
Subaru's get under your skin, it's true, I wanted a new Impreza - but, my head has always ruled my heart .... I have always been able to break decisions down into their component parts - and to buy a new Subaru Impreza STi at £27,000 is down to emotion rather than any logic.

and your full of emotion driving an Mx 5 aint u, or do you cut hair ?
Everyone to there own in the end. I just didnt enjoy getting in my car when it was an oil burner, ok i saved Money A BIT but i actually Lost out on company car miles at 11p a mile VS 22p i get now.
The oil burner as i saw it was a car and nothing more, the scooby is a car and more, its fun, yeah drinks fuel IF u thrash it, play safe and its ok 24 to 30 mpg.
If you want to go through life enjoying other things rather than ya car then get a insignificant car like a civic.
If you wanna enjoy yaself and have nice comments get a scoob
I,ll be honest here rather than Bias, ive had quite a few cars in my 4 decades of living, and the scoob has turned more heads had people point and even stop me to say its very nice.
Only the other day in harrogate the manager at Maccie Ds came out and spoke to me about it as i was waiting on my daughters fish fingers, priceless.
Enjoy ya diesals, Im lucky enough to not bother much about that extra ££ im losing Life to short to drive boring cars, fun is King

The reason he came out is because he sees Scoobies every Friday night in his Car Park, driven by Chavs, admired by chavs and surrounded bt pubescent teenage girls!!!
I wouldn't go telling everyone that a McDonalds Manager finds your car attractive!!

My 15 year old MX5, being immaculate and old, does get looks and comments everytime I use it ..... at a value of £3500 it's also worth more than 98% of Scoobys
I think that says it all, really.

My father in law has a 1.8 c max. He gets 25mpg driving around town, I get 22. I pay £70 more tax per year. Insurance is £500 a year more for me to drive modded Impreza compared to a 1.2 Corsa.
I dont really understand what the fuss is about unless you are driving long distances going for a dullard car isnt going to give me significant savings to make me think it was worth giving up a car that I enjoy looking out of the window to look at, kids at school dont shut up about or that leads to good petrol station comments/chats with other car enthusiasts. I would happily buy another Subaru.

In all honesty you would not get that for it Pete, maybe on a forecourt in absolute mint condition with low mileage but as a private seller you'd be very lucky to fetch 3k let alone 3.5k.

As for looks ... well, come on, the Scooby ain't no looker!!
Then we have the quality of the Scooby ... those Amstrad Hi-Fi Heater controls are a disgrace!!
But, as I said, I'm glad there are plenty of people willing to pay through the nose so I can enjoy cheap motoring ......... keep it up!!
It took me 6 months to find mine, about 8 years ago. 2 years ago I went to find one for my daughter .... what I found was staggering - all that were for sale were junk, well worn, rubbish (still for £2000+). Nothing came close to mine except the later cars at £5000+
That's why I know that, if I advertised mine, it would be the very best available and the price asked is the price to buy it - and that would be around the £3500 mark .... any less and I would store it.
The 25mpg is a 2 year old C max petrol. Yes Im sure you can get 55mpg around town but good grief you need to be a Grandma to want to drive a car that will do that.
Looks are subjective but I love the 17"alloys, red caliper 4 pots, spoilers, extended arches, prodrive exhaust. I cant think of any other car really that offers the performance package for the prices these are going for, i.e. £7000ish is what mine is worth, 56 plate 23,000miles.
Should have mentioned quality as well. By far the cheapest car I have ever run regarding niggles, repairs etc...in fact when you think about it that makes it the cheapest car Ive owned to run. Hmmm...

There are very few like mine around these days and every year sees its value increase - it's a funny market, the MX5 market. People will pay for the best ........

The prices of Scoobys is very unpredictable at the current time .... no-one wants a 20 mpg car anymore. Most cars these days can get 55 mpg PLUS can deliver very fine performance when wanted (yes, the mpg drops to 40 when you play - but a Scooby drops to single figures!!!!)
It's the end of the line and it's only going to get worse for costs ..... and the used values will be as flat as a witches tit.
To be honest I dont think there will be a problem selling on an Impreza, up to '07s for a good few years. There are always people who are car enthusiasts and a used Subaru is one of those iconic cars (it is around here) that boy/men racers will go for. Wanting an economical car isnt something on their tick sheet, initially cheap (cost of purchase) high attainable thrills will be. Look at the credit crunch, people got carried away in buying things they couldnt really afford because it was in easy reach. Its in their nature, they will buy now if its cheap and worry about actually paying for it later.
I think that petrol Astra, Focus owners and the like should be more concerned as there is little difference between them and the diesels models so why would someone buy a petrol variant. These petrol versions offer nothing to any particular market, the Impreza will.

Tell me Pete why do you quote the torque figure in NM rather than LBS feet?
I think you will find that 340NM is not that actually that much, in 2002 I had a fully loaded Audi A3 TDi Quattro Sport and it was an outstanding mile muncher and quite frankly it would have jumped all over your Honda in performance and quality terms.
It handled well due to the 4WD system but even back in 2002 it was £27,500 so as I see it the diesel have not really progressed a great deal since then.
I suppose that Honda may have caught up recently with Diesel technology that has been available from European manufacturers for some time...
