Can you play a film from a computer via an ethernet cable to a tv to watch?

The best and only thing good i found with AppleTV was the movie previews you could watch. It fell over trying to do anything else. Anyway, it's not a Apple vs AC Ryan thread.

For very little outlay, the PlayOn will do everything and more for the OP.

You never mentioned you had a laptop

If you are able to connect your laptop to the tv so the laptops display is output on the tv you have a solution.

You'd need to share the folder on the PC that has the films in then on the laptop open the shared folder and play the film and voila, it's on your tv.

You won't have to concern yourself with who's right in the great Apple TV versus PlayOn debate either this way

only problem with that is that laptop is very old and is running windows 98-and it just isn't fast enough to play any video files on it.
