Thumbs down

It's sad to see the end of the Harrier, well before it was due to be retired (was going to be around 2018).
Many aircraft had only recently been upgraded to GR9s, and the last Mk107 Pegasus engine was delivered around 5 years ago. Many of the 40 Mk107 engines have only run for a few hundred hours and not even reached their first overhaul! So much money just thrown away. Yes, it might save some money, but what about the wasted investment?

Reference the USMC Harrier / Pegasus maintenance, this should be to the same standard as the RAF - there is only one way to maintain aircraft / jet engine, and that is the 'correct way', using the manuals produced by the manufacturers. It is not the policy of the aviation industry to take short cuts or improvise, for obvious reasons!

I doubt there will be any flying 'private' harriers in the UK - it's a complicated machine and I BAEs or Rolls-Royce wouldn't touch it with a barge pole. A guy in the states has tired to get work done to make an airworthy private plane, but I don't think he got very far....

There's a privately owned and airworthy Sea Harrier FA2 in the states.

The Harrier is an outstanding aircraft both as a close fighter and a ground attack machine.

We cannot afford to lose its services and those of the Ark Royal. We now have a hole in our defences which cannot be covered for an estimated 10 years!

Its like not bothering to pay the insurance premium in the hope that nothing untoward will happen!

Grossly irresponsible.

I have to say, I am bitterly disappointed with this new shower, already.
Making cuts on the easiest target, that no one wants. And the cuts people do want are being ignored.
Daily Mail printed a fantastic picture
