Don't just assume that spending more will get you a better tyre - watch out for the really cheap and nasties though. Many so called "mid range" tyres are as good if not better than so called "premium brands" and usually cost a lot less. Spend more if it makes you feel better.......

when i got my conties from quick fit it was because i got into a situation where a road trip to sweden was nessacary and urgent i diddnt have time to shop around, diddnt have time to mail order some tires, diddnt have a lot of choice because of my tire size, so i went to kwick fit they did the business the tires were £200 each but they are in my opinion well tested and realy made a difference I saw weather there i havent seen here for 20 years and the tires did their job

It's more cost efficient not to drive in the few days of snow we average yearly.

1) more chance of crashing or being crashed into.
2) Salt on the roads eats your car.
3) Winter tyres cost a lot.

But if you need to use your car for work that's not an option.
snow tyres are worth every penny

I'd say very few people really NEED to drive to work, in sense that I define need like one would NEED to breath.

The only reason I've bought them is because I want to see what a Subarus really made of when driven in the snow

Winter Tyres are designed to work efficently at the low temps you get during the winter months. I have them on my car from November through to March. They are not just for use when snow is on the ground....

A lot of people need to drive to work as there is no other way to get there. The forecast states that we will have snow for the next 7 days in the north east.
Most people can't take a full week off work at the drop of a hat
That's why i have the SNOW tyres (not winter) on the forester and parked the impreza in the garage.

Last year I didn't manage to get into the office for nearly a month (from 16th December until 14th January). I have no desire to repeat this so I've just put a set of Nokian WRG2's on the car.

StrikE - you just knew they would though! lol.
I was out this morning as soon as I saw the snow as my car is down a slope, across abit, next to a hedge! I wanted to try the Nokian's out. Anyway, I am sat here now waiting for my wife to get ready so I can go out and drive in it!
As stated above regarding work, etc. I had enough issues myself last time, especially on my hill where I live that I am not going through that again.
Just to re-iterate another valid comment as well, these tyres aint cheap, but neither is my insurance excess either. I would rather invest in our safety myself.

Just tried my Winter tyres out. Dunlop Winter Sport's Awesome. 4" of snow here and the car drives like it's on a normal road None of our local roads are salted or cleared so well worth the money.
Bough mine part used for £235 for all 4, fitted from eBay

They were up to £140 a couple of weeks ago.

One thing to bear in mind is these are V rated. Its ok to fit a slower speed rating with winter tyres, most insurance companies will allow this (chris knott said no problem). Just be aware of what the speed rating is particularly if your likely to want to approach those speeds in dry weather.

I checked the lower speed rated a few weeks ago and they were a lot cheaper, but I've just checked and it looks like all winter tyres regardless of size have shot up. I guess it's a case of supply/demand. Glad I already had mine

(Was looking at getting ContiWinterContact TS 830 P's fitted at the end of next week, though slightly pricey lol)

Guessing that if it gets as bad as last year, might be nice to have some shoes that suit the snow.

My Dad's foz before and after the snow the wheels in the after shot are S**t but the tyres are mint. Bridgestone blizzak snow and mud studless tyres.

LOL! Like it. Mind you, keep your eye out for the new series of IRT's as they get to drive them stupidly dangerous roads up mountains and stuff!
Lets see Hugh race that fu**a!

I've been out in the snow today for the first time with my new Pirelli Sotto Zero series II winter tyres on my spec-D and the grip was amazing. I am very pleased with them and glad I got them. Would recommend them 100%.

Theres a reason I only use Nokian Hakkapeliitta studded tires.

Continentals and Michelin X Ice Norths come close, but they are developed in Germany and France, Nokia tires have been made and tested in the arctic for decades.

Also, high profile narrow tires work best, I run 205/50/16s, would run 195/55/15s if they would clear my brakes.

I've got Yoko W Drives on and have just driven 45 mins on very frosty roads with the car's thermometer reading -1degrees and the car handled beautifully. I bought them form Mytyres and would definitely recommend them. I thought winter tyres would feel very squidgy compared with my GSD3s, but there aren't at all. The ride feels a little more cushioned, but they feel dependable and turn in nicely.

As others have said, these tyres aren't just for snow (and proper snow needs snow tyres, rather than cold weather/winter tyres). The point is that summer tyres like GSD3s aren't designed to operate at the best below 5 degrees.

I had exactly the same issue several weeks ago. I ended up buying 225/45/17s instead from pneus-online.com - about £120 per corner.
