At the time this particular engine was at the forefront of Subaru Development. Only months before "expert" opinion was that 400 bhp on a 2 litre would be impossible, if it was you would need a CDB and the car would be "undrivable" on the road. Oh and the engine would not last for long.
This was before any reliable 2.5 litres had been produced and the capability of the 2 litre Classic engine was not known and so we were learning all the time and what is normal now was new territory in 2003. 585/464 was not shabby in 2003, it was at the top of the tree and the relatively "low" torque was probably because the car was running 1.8 bar or less which at the time was considered earth shattering.

Just to remove any scepticism about reference to Well Lane referred to previously, the car ran 417 bhp at Well Lane at a rolling road day. Previous top figures were around 360 bhp and indeed on the day it was hoped that one car would reach 380 bhp. Some people laughed when I said my car would do 401 bhp and half the crowd were ecstatic when we got 417 bhp but the remainder looked very p155ed off. I was then accused of cheating or the rollers were duff despite the fact I ran immediately after the car expected to take the day at 380 bhp and only did 359 bhp from memory immediately before my run.
I then turned up at Southern Rolling Road Day at G-Force (now DSM) a few weeks later and by some sheer fluke the 417 figure was repeated exactly. Various runs were done in Scotland, Well Lane, G-Force, Pro Sport, Power Engineering, Power Station etc. and whatever results were produced at one place were replicated at another. Like I said this engine/car was at the forefront of Subaru engine power development at the time.

Thanks.
In 2003 that was very exceptional, indeed at the time probably unique but in 2010 2 litre engines without nitrous can produce 700 bhp or thereabout. I am not sure which ones are still open deck but it is not the block that is the achilles heel on these engines as far as I can tell so far and exceeding 500 bhp does not need a closed deck block as many others have proven now.

As ever another informative post by Harvey.

It's input like that which gave me the confidence to push mine just that little bit more and test the water.

Now the level I am at and is used pretty much everyday my engine is fine. Just needs that more regular oil change and check over etc.
Not sure how many of the big power boys will voich for using there car everyday for the likes of school runs,Tesco etc.

Just wish this was in 2003. lol

Steve

I do and so does Mike Latimer and both of us are running 700+! Both of ours have original interior and mine has Air Con just to top it. Mine is my only car and so visits everywhere, particularly local Tescos atleast 3 times a week. I also understand that another owner on here by name of BigArf also drives his 600+ with similar everyday usage. All depends on how its built and mapped Steve.

I am sure that the likes of Stealthy55, Skullfudge, Fai17 (600+) also do the same and they are running easily over 500+. I am sure JGM drives his (or use to) 600+ around quite a bit.

mines very happy in traffic or just plodding along bearing in mind its a big "bolt on" on a standard 2.0 but that must be down to the mapping

JP / Banny, I know you guys do. Mine is not anywhere near the leader board so to speak but is nice to know hand on heart it is used daily running that power etc. See Mike every now and then in the old girl.

I think a lot is down to the mapper of choice on how to get the best out of the car.
