You stated this last week sometime and got a reply that I'd say you haven't read. Why aren't you using Microsoft Exchange for free push emails via Gmail?

I did not see the reply, I have actually setup up gmail through exchange (I found details about this on the web last week because I thought it must have a problem with the setup)

I have 6 gmail app accounts on my ipad and 10 on my android phone, emails coming through instantly on my phone and about 5 to 10 minutes later they come through on the ipad UNLESS i actually open the email program on the ipad then I get a flurry of bing, bing, bing, bing, bing where it seems to poll the email server when I open the email program.

So the emails are definitely not being pushed instantly to the ipad like they do on android and blackberry, what i think the ipad is doing is doing the equivalent of a Send/Receive every 5 or 10 minutes to check for emails.

I get the same on mine. The berry will ding, the android would dong, and the ipad would catch up a few mins later.
I have to say though, even with effective push email, some servers are slack at sending it through.

When it is first set-up it appears to be slower to receive but I now receive emails instantly. In fact my desktop email client 'bings' at almost the same time as the phone.

Typically though it always pays to turn off and on my iPhone once a day and after charging as it sometimes doesn't play ball unless I do.

We just had a push race in the office. Blackberry won - boo, hiss - followed by my iPhone on Gmail Exchange, followed by a colleague using a Desire with Gmail, my Mobile Me was the slowest.

Of course this test is absolutely useless, but was fun anyhow. The difference between first and last was a matter of seconds.

you remind me of an old style communist Jack - telling people what they should or shouldn't like/want/need

it is so hypnotic even i'm beginning to think there might be something in this Apple lark

Mobile Me is awesome, I use 'Back to my Mac' a lot, iDisk is in constant use as is the synchronisation of my... well everything, between two Mac's and my iPhone. Find my iPhone has saved my bacon on many an occasion. Yes I know you can do most of it for free, but as with most things, you get what you pay for.

The thing is Hodgy, there is something in it.

Yes and in the case of Mobile Me push email you pay for something slower than a free service.

Hodgy0_2 - Apple, Blackberry, Android or whatever, it is easier to think they are all about as annoying as each other, but just in different areas.

I know I know

I had a HTC windows mobile device for a while, what a load of cr4p that was, to be fair not bad as an email device, but as a phone it was essentially an answer phone

I went to my systems dept and they gave me a blackberry -- better as a phone, imo not as good as the HTC for pure email

but they all still annoy me in one way or another

I just had a bad experience at the weekend re signing my son up with an Apple ID - bit i've calmed down now

I have nearly finished building my own 'superphone'. I am having badges for the casing made up as we speak.

Lol at Jack

Tell you what, lets see if we can settle this once and for all

I'll give you 5 simple iphone tasks, you complete & video them - post them on here for all to see, and if they prove me wrong, i'll not post on any iphone threads any more (within reason )

If the iphone fails to complete the task, then so what, its what we already knew

NB The iphone must be out of the box vanilla, no apps pre downloaded , or downloaded to complete the tasks

Task 1)

Starting easy ...

Take a picture of a fast moving object using the burst picture mode of the phone. - Publish all of them on here

Task 2)

Slightly harder...

Using the inbuilt browser, navigate to Sky news.com, and watch the 3 minute news update. video the news shown on the phone and post it here

Task 4 )

Should be a walk in the park now

Find the following site http://www.tindeck.com/listen/cbyr

Stream the song , then download it onto the iphone

Task 5
Should be cruising now.

transfer the downloaded mp3 to another mobile device using bluetooth

then transfer another file from a phone to the iphone via bluetooth

NB you cant use itunes to do any of the work for you

Your call Jack

No need for sky news there's a free app for that with video

Burst picture mode? Why would you need a phone to do that? I have a perfect Dslr to that.

I don't see your point mart, we can all list things that other phones can't do then say it's crap because it can't.

Exactly, we take it on the chin and accept flaws with what we have ,

but the fanboys? even with all the known limitations of the iphone, they

still refuse to accept it

Even you have come back with a "why do you need that" comment.

I need a camera on my phone because i don't have a camera

Just because you don't need or want something, doesn't automatically

mean everyone else doesn't need or want that function

BTW I already downloaded the sky app, it still says you need flash & java

to view the video

Maybe there is something wrong with your iPhone.

Mine runs the Sky News Videos with no problems at all - not downloaded anything extra other than the Sky News App.

In fact I am now watching Sky News live on my iPhone - incredible isn't it!

As yours clearly isn't working properly then maybe that's why you are so unhappy with it. Or maybe it is a user error.

Speaking of running video on iPhone, well almost, iPad in this case.
Does anyone else find YouTube frustratingly slow on the iPad?

I loaded and watched the same video on the laptop and iPad at the same time, while the laptop streamed it beautifully, the iPad stopped started and stuttered all the way through. Same source, same connection, same time.

I thought the iPad would excel at such things. But once again the trusty windows laptop wiped the floor with it.

omg Snazy - i've been thinking that streaming stutter is my talktalk connection!

And for you Mart, i think it's okay to be excited about a product if it does make you smile. you're obviously not getting on well with iphone. to be fair, if all i did was make calls, i might not use iphone at all.

I do like that apple is coming up with well designed user centric devices. i'm glad steve jobs is mad about the user experience and the minimalist design - we all benefit i think.
I disagree that we're all blind to their foibles though - i don't personally like the new MBA or rate OSX Lion as a significant OS evolution.

More companies should think about what users want and think about design and UI from the start - who remembers any mp3 players from before ipod? exactly.
