Big D, I know it can be a real kick in the teeth when someone questions your results and work and we would nearly all take it as a personal insult and an attack upon our (yours in this case) good name.

I know that it feels that it is you against the world (well at least some of the Subaru Tuning Guru's in the UK) but I feel that everyone is interested in seeing if the results can be replicated and verified by another RR.

The only real way that this 'issue' will be resolved is to have another dyno session at another RR - which you have agreed to have carried out at SRR. Whether S4U did or did not carry out the dyno session properly can be argued by interested parties on either side of the divide.

I think that once the dyno session has been carried out at SRR who are acknowledged to be about the best DD RR in the UK.

I await the result with anticipation as a neutral observer.

Yes it is a bit of a kick in the teeth, I dont mind it being me against the world so long as the world has manners and is willing to give an individual a chance. Instead some on here choose to ridicule and shame the individual which is quite apparent on not only this thread but on others too, sad really.

I am more than happy to go to SRR and I hope that the output shown is inline with S4U as I feel that Len has done nothing wrong and did everything in his power to give me an accurate dyno reading.

Cheers Iain

Count me in Myles. I will put a tenner towards Iains dyno run. I know Iain works hard for his cash and 3 dyno days are enough to empty any wallet.

Will the SRR run be with the same intake set-up or are any changes planned before-hand?

No changes would be the right way to do it IMO.

I am sure the issue is the intake temp sensor at S4U as even with it in free air flow from the fans in front of the car it was reading ambient +5C. That cannot be correct or not unless the cooling fans has a heating element

I am sure it is going to be good figures though (and right at the top of VF35 power expectations) as the 1/4 mile time shows it will be.

LISTEN TO WHAT I AM TELLING YOU,

With the car already at running temp at idle on the rollers with the fan switched off and the IT sensor attached to the intake cone itself and the bonnet closed the IT temp was at first close to AT and holding.

With any input (no boost) from the accelerator the temp increased indicating that the intake is drawing HOT AIR from the engine bay (not pulling radiated head from a pipe that is at this point cold).

With the engine still at idle and the IT at about 22/23 deg the rad fan was switched on, instantly the IT shot up to over 30 deg, proving that the high intake temp is not being influenced by the intercooler pipe which at this point is still cold.

NOW THINK AGAIN

Cheers Iain
Not sure I can interpret the IT probe mis-reading here, but then much of it doesn't make much sense.
IT holding at AT with the engine running and no fan on sounds totally wack.

Another suggestion for the SRR session is to run it "as is" first, then remove the drivers headlight plus that ali divider and compare the runs for IT.

It would have been easier to have you there to see what the IT sensor was doing to be honest.

1. With the IT sensor off the car (no where near a heat source) the IT showed AT.

2. With the IT initially fitted to the intake filter (clipped to not touching) and the bonnet closed engine at idle also initially showed the same as AT give or take a deg, the reason I said it was holding at close to AT whilst nothing was being done was to show that when even a small throttle input was made that it was easy to see that the engine was drawing hot air from the other side of the headshield, this was very clear to see whilst watching the IT on the screen. Obviously the IT would have eventually gone up if left with the engine at idle without the fan on but for a short while after the IT probe was fitted the IT was stable and gave a good starting point for my invest into the high IT.

3. After having seen the IT rise with throttle input alone the IT was now showing 20+ deg give or take , at this point the dyno fan was switched on and the IT shot up to over 30 deg, I put this down to hot air being pushed out of the engine bay past the heatshield into the intake the only difference this time is that Len had removed the weather strip above the drivers side light which allowed for some cooling air to get to the filter which helped reduce the IT from 40+ down to 33(makes perfect sence to me as when the fan is switched on the main engine bay is of a slightly higher pressure than where the filter is so the hot air is going to naturally want to flow to the point of lower pressure, bearing in mind that with the engine running the induction from the engine will add to this effect).

4. You still think that the IT probe is faulty because of when it was fitted to the front of the car on the bonnet release catch it was still 5 deg over ambient, that is fair enough, but when the air from the dyno fan passes through the rad and then hits the front of the engine does this not create a turbulant bubble of air at the front of the car and will this air not be warmer than ambient and the IT probe was sat right in it. If the IT probe was removed from the car and placed nearer the dyno fan the IT probe temp would have dropped below AT.

So you want me to keep my intake oven fitted for the next run? Going by what was said about the correction of the bhp in relation to IT I dont think it will make that much difference, but if you want me to keep it in I will.

Cheers Iain

I was going to suggest running the car with the drivers side light removed when I last whet to S4U infact I had the grille removed and all the headlight screws undone whilst Len prepped the dyno, but we did not run it with the headlight out, the IT would have been alot closer to AT if we had done that though and even more so if the run had been done with the bonnet open too, I am glad the runs were done with the bonnet shut though as it brought my heatsheild problem to light.

Just thought I would lighten things up a wee bit

here is a picture of my old VF35 which is now fitted to my brothers 2004 Shogun Sport 2.5 diesel, it has a full decat and a Snakehead downpipe and everything

How much boost do chip fat burners run? I heard they're fairly high boost as a diesel's conrods are stronger as standard?

I thought it was all about compression and fueling on Diesel's rather than a shedload of boost.

open the fuel pump up and watch it black smoke, thats when you've got a proper diesel.

They run high compression, but I thought that was to generate enough heat for compression ignition? Fuel is only injected when piston is near TDC so much less change of Det on diesel's. Also running much less revs so less chance of everything flying apart.

I think higher boost helps Diesel's run cleaner too?

Edit: This guy hits about 50psi 3 minutes in! Not ya standard set up though.

Iain said finances are not flush enough for three dyno runs in one month (can't blame him!). The next run will be very soon after payday, end of the month I would wager.

Correct

And if I run with the car as it is now dont be surprised if the IT and AT show the same trend as before

I have however now fitted a cold air feed and the heatshield is having a huge makeover, but I will run with the old heatshield at SRR out of interest of comparison.

Cheers Iain
