Leaving aside all the hype, and speaking as a part time photographer who gets comissioned to do photoshoots who also happens to live in a rural setting in the Scottish Highlands, I would comment as follows.

The iphone 4, with a case or bumper (which they need imo for protection anyway) that will cost you between £12 and £20 if apple no longer giving them away free would be perfect for your needs.

All phone cameras have serious compromises. Pixel density on such tiny sensors creates "noise", lens quality isn't that great. The iphone 4 camera function is pretty good for phone, and whilst it may not be the best overall, is probably up there with the best of the comparable touch screen smartphones.

The HD video, however, is very good on the iphone4 and the best I've seen from any phone.

Without discounting anything about signal issues Tony has posted, speaking from direct experience, my iphone4 with case has been absolutely fine. Much better than the 3 i had before and much better than the 3gs of my neighbour. if you are not in a 3G area (as I am regularly), you simply switch off 3g and there are no switching issues and a better quality signal to boot. Granted it should do it itself, but its hardly a dealbreaker when compared to the other features.

If I can' I'll try and get a pic uploaded for comparisons. You'll have to trust me on the signal point.

But go to the store and have a play with a few. Buy what you like using the most.

My Desire is on 2.2 and when I ran the Quadrant benchmark it shows my phone at 1200 and the Galaxy S at 800. You got the wrong phone
