I pay for 8 meg but get 11, I said I would never go back with BT but I never really had any problems with them until I had to deal with their customer diservice.
My Mum on the other hand she signed up with talk talk got a router that looks like it came out of a kinder egg and has had nothing but problems with her connection.,

im paying ( too much ) for 1mb as afaik and it seems to be what im getting . It takes 4 minutes to actually get online to start with tho and infrequently but everyday at some point whole minutes to get to the next page

I see this all the time, your BRAS profile is all too ****, It is unlikely that there is a line problem severe enough to cause your profile to be 'capped' at 1/4 meg, (although i regularly see un-filtered extensions, usually sky, dropping speeds from say 4mbps to 400kbps). With your line, and faults i have seen with similar speeds, usually it is misbehaving software either for no reason, or due to faulty equipment at the exchange.
Rarely, i do see REIN problems causing havoc with broadband speeds, this is an electrical noise interfering with the ADSL frequency, this is easily checked by tuning a radio to 612khz, best done in your car, as you drive toward your property, you will hear a massive change in 'backround noise' if you do have a REIN problem. (this frequency is used as it is a harmonic of ADSL).
Either way, Insist they send an engineer out, this is the only way it will get resolved properly.

My Talk Talk connection (been with them 6 months now) is rock solid and stable, and I am pretty pleased with the performance. BT could only ever give me 6MBit and now I get double that for quite a bit less money.
My experience with Talk Talk is that as long as you have new cables, a good up to date router and the knowledge to go through the re-profiling of the line with them, then you will get good results.

Just tried a couple of tests to check what speeds I'm getting as I didn't know.
I'm happy with the results considering its the free broadband option from Sky. Better than the old days of 56k dial up . . . . . . click on a webpage then go get a drink, take a dump, have a shower and be sat back in fornt of the monitor just as the page had finished loading!
