o2 Broadband. Seriously????
How come every previous provider can manage 4m, but when you offer 'up to' 20m I get, at best, 1.5m- but usually this..... I suppose you get what you pay for.

BE*Unlimited are superb so I'm surprised you are having problems -- have you checked the capacity on your exchange? Perhaps it is in the process of being upgraded?
I get 1.7mb/s - 1.9mb/s with BE*

I'm actually with o2, either speedtest is identifying it wrongly or they're piggybacking I suppose.
I was with bethere a while back- guess they're the same company? Had nothing but unreliability. Suspect my exchange is the problem.
I'm actually typing this from my iPad over 3G, at circa 3.5m. Home connection is no use at all
Cheers

I`ve had major speed issues for yonks! Left BT and tried Talktalk....less said the better about those useless tw@ts!!!!!.
I then signed up with Virgin. For a long time I`ve only ever had 0.13 meg....with Virgin I now get 1.9 - 2.4 woohoo. But........sometimes I get similar speeds to the above and it`s due to my `profile` dropping which is caused by a loss in connection or a fault (which BT have just worked on after losing my landline completely)
Usually when I ring Virgin (quite a pleasant experience as I get to talk to someone who actually speaks and understands the English language) I get a result after they perform a `tweak`. So it`s actually worth ringing your provider up and see if they can sort it ;-)

This is me
o2 use the Be network. Never had anything but great service and have been with both. I'm never going to get 24mbps because of my distance from the exchange. But happy nonetheless.

and type your postcode in to see how far you are from the exchange. It's only an estimate. Then look at this to estimate your speed (use the green curve)
It'll only be an estimate, but if you're way off then you probably have a line problem, Your ping is very high so I think something is wrong.

If you click on the Samknows link above
then click on Exchange Mapping
Enter your post code
Click on the map where your house is
Enter your house number in the pop up box
It will then tell you what speed you should be getting.
To be honest the few people I've tried using this get very slightly more using the speedtest than Samknows says.

Mmmm. 1305m from the exchange. All the sites say ~2.5mb/s, used to get 3.5 with three previous ISP's. Graph suggests I should get about 23!
Thanks for the help and pointers guys, I'll wait for o2 to come back to me.
Its been horrendously flaky since the day I switched. Came on at about 3 but fell over about three times a day, guess their equipment has set it where they reckon its stable, about 1.5-2, and maybe last night was a freak occurrence with the high winds or something...

When I moved my "Up to 8 Mbit" from BT to O2 the download speed increased from 4 or 5 to just under 7 on a regular basis. In fact, before they "tuned" my line I was seeing over 11 (which I guess indicates what I might get if I went for the "Up to 20 Mbit" service.
I've been very happy with ADSL from O2, so I guess there are local issues for you.

I've been with O2 for about 18 months now and it's been great
I'm on the 20mb package, line connects at about 17mb according to the router and I get about 15mb in actual download speeds
the problem is more than likely with your BT line, my Dad had a load of issues with his broadband a couple of years ago and it was the line

Look to see what your downstream attenuation is in your router stats and put it in an online calculator like this one:
http://fremnet.net/article/216/adsl-...eed-calculator
You will be able to tell if the attenuation is too high (i.e. a possible line problem) because it will come up with a theoretical distance to the exchange that is much greater than what you are expecting.
If its a thomson router u might find your stats here:

I pay for 8 meg but get 11, I said I would never go back with BT but I never really had any problems with them until I had to deal with their customer diservice.
My Mum on the other hand she signed up with talk talk got a router that looks like it came out of a kinder egg and has had nothing but problems with her connection.,

make sure you remove the ring wire from your phone socket. normally improves your line stats and improves speed.
Internet speeds are all one big con. If you cant get cable then your max ADSL speed is pretty much set in stone

Ok, had a few email exchanges with o2. Reset the router to default and immediate 2.8mb/s.
Changed to my netgear router and immediate improvement again to 3.4 mb/s (line showing 3.8 capable).
An hour later..... line showing capable of 3103kb down & 1122kb up, but we're back to square one speedwise...

At least your pings are better now RRH. That initial 800ms response is an eternity, I think second class post might be quicker.
This reminds me I need to get on to BT about our works ADSL BB: We're paying for 8MB but getting 3.8MB and a rather lethargic 100ms -150ms ping.
Its rock solid stable ('til the roofers damaged the incomming cable), but as more and more people in the area had gone ADSL, its caused our own connection to slow down to the point that its too slow for modern needs, especially when many websites with rich and oevr-bloated content demand alot of bandwitdth and low reponse time to be usuable (cough, scoobynet ), its becoming a headache. Especially when at home my Virgin L 10Mb internet (cable broadband - as opposed to ADSL) ticks along happily at 9.8Mb with a sub 20ms ping.
