All trout have the same tail as Trout says, Sea Trout over here too, but they are the equivalent of Steelhead being a brown trout which decided to go down river to the sea.Steelhead if I remember right are the Sea Trout version of a Rainbow. Maybe Trout can confirm that.

All fly fishing

Now here is the thing about steelhead. They are indeed a sea going version of Rainbow Trout.

I remember when I was younger reading that Rainbows were not a trout, but a char like Lake Trout and Bull Trout.

They have now been reclassified as Pacific Salmon, same family as sockeye, coho, etc.

So it is more like Rainbows being landlocked salmon!

You are right - I photoshopped the fish to make them smaller as I knew you wouldn't believe me

Not really taken as a dig - more a bit of fun.

The two luxuries I have are that I travel a lot with what I do and that means I can be in places to take a holiday, or get to know people who can help me out when I get there - like our trip to Orlando.

The second thing is that I set up my own business five years ago to give me the flexibility to travel and I have worked to ensure the business has a significant amount of passive revenue so that it earns even when I am not there.

I guess that now that the kids are starting school then I may be more limited!!!

I think they all are descended more or less from Char. There is another type which I am sure you will have heard about and that is "Brook Trout". That was supposed to be a closer descendant from Char, or so they said. SW Water used to stock Fernworthy Reservoir with Brook Trout. They used to deny it but they had a different appearance from Brown and Rainbow trout. They were actually quite good looking fish and they certainly tasted good too. Unfortunately SWW don't stock them any more.

I am surprised that they have re-classified Rainbows closer to the salmon family. It is interesting that Rainbows which normally dont breed in this country will actually do so in the Wye in the Duke of Devonshire's estate near Bakewell Derbys.

What sort of fly was the demon killer over there then, apart from the orange blob?

We spent just over 3 weeks touring British Columbia and the Rockies by car/hotels a couple of years ago.

It is without a doubt the best thing I have ever done and seen by a long way.

Those who want to go..... get saving as it will be worth every penny

You are right about Brook Trout - another member of the char family.

Rainbow are now in the genus Oncorhynchus which is the same as Coho, Sockeye, Pink, King, Chum and Cutthroat Trout.

Brook Trout, Lake Trout, Bull Trout, Artic Char are all forms of char. Char also have seagoing versions called Dolly Varden.

All very complicated!

I have a consulting and training business - my clients are mostly large consultancies and IT service companies in the Financial Services sector.

So I consult to the consultants! Now how about that for getting as far as possible from actually making something!

Very cool pictures there trout.

We have a client that goes off on these Salmon fishing trips to Russia. It's not my thing but he's quite obsessive about it.

The salmon fishing in Russia is amazing. The main downside is that you fly around to the fishing everyday in old, Sikorsky helicopters full of bullet holes with vodka saturated pilots - even at breakfast time!

The rainbows in BC are a reasonable size. If you want BIG rainbows then you need to fish in Alaska.

When the sockeye salmon are spawning in their thousands, massive rainbows, char and grayling gather below them to hoover up all the loose eggs and bits of flesh that break off as the salmon deteriorate rapidly during and after spawning.

Fishing with an egg fly or flesh fly you can catch rainbows and lake trout up to 20lbs!!!

Yes it is, I had forgotten the Dolly Varden. I remember them mentioning the Cut throat trout with a red line on its neck as well.

So it was the orange blob fly then.

The steelheads were mostly caught on a Pink Teeny (the only fishing fly with a patent - designed by THE Pacific Salmon expert Jim Teeny).

As the rivers are SO rocky the locals don't use a tied fly as such, just a very strong hook with a 2inch tuft of very soft fluorescent pink wool. The local knitting shops even sell it as Steelhead Pink. And very effective it is too!

Interesting to use pink rather than orange to represent the salmon eggs.

Maybe I ought to try a pink fly on the sea trout then.

The pink we were using was the colour of a Staedler Pink Flouro Marker of the type you get in WH Smiths.

The materials came from Veniards but they were special order by Angling Direct.

I will try and get a photo up of a Pink Teeny.

And yes, I think they would work on Sea Trout as it was a killer colour for all the salmon we caught.

Thanks Trout, I will tie something up and try it anyway, have to wait for the river to go down after the rain.
