It was just a bad call. I think he was beguiled by Bush and perhaps had hopes that he would be a hero like Maggie over the Falklands.

And he persuaded himself that Saddam did have WMD and influential people, notably Alistair Campbell, patted him on the back and said he was doing the right thing.

So a basic lack of judgment but bear in mind that Saddam did need taking out even though "regime change" was a banned act. I often wondered if the West had plans to just assassinate him and his evil family. Mossad would have helped.

I have to disagree with that dl. I think he knew what the score was, he was appearing on the TV asking people if they woulf be happy about attacking if there was a UN resolution to say so. I am sure he knew that likelihood of WMD being found was virtually non existent. Why did he lie to us and the House and why was that cheating dossier produced by Campbell if not to try to convince the country? Why were we and the House told that Saddam could launch WMD inside 45 minutes? What really happened to Dr Kelly when he spilled the beans about the lack of WMD? Why was there no official inquest into Dr Kelly's death rather than a cover up with the Hutton report which deliberately ignored so much of the evidence given to it and why have the papers of the report been suppressed for 70 years?

Can you really think that he did not know what was really happening, do you remember that he told us that he got a vicarious thrill from sending our troops into battle?

Too much stacked against what you say I am afraid.

I know Saddam was a tyrant but the Iraqis were saying that he at least was able to keep the Sunni's and the Sh'ites apart and the Iraqi's did at least have water and electricity as well as a country.

It is always down to the people to sort out their leaders.

What have they got now if not a destroyed country and every so often a suicide bomber doing his bit to kill large numbers of innocent people?
