It's as much now it makes you feel owning or being seen wearing an expensive watch.
The same is true about any 'luxury' goods.
My wife likes expensive hand bags as they make her happy. They do the same job as a carrier but she won't walk into a bar with a Tesco bag.

to play devil's advocate here, without choice there would be no personalization or ability to make yourself stand out. ergo, it stands to reason there would be choice in a range from cheap to expensive.
and, in point of fact, the expensive pioneering brand technology filters down to the cheap stuff so your £30 watch has the tech from a £1000 watch 20 years ago.
same goes for the cheap clothes of today being based on the catwalk designs of 2 years ago.
i guess i am trying to say, the world of the expensive model/brand is here to stay and is acceptable.

and both iphone 4s get between 3 or 4 hours constant use each day and are a justifiable upgrade over the old 3G (photography mainly).
i guess I have prioritized my money and a nice watch is way way down the list.

For some yes, but not for everyone.
For some its about owning a piece of mechanical "art", an appreciation of the history, the form and the quality of materials used.
For some its all about the show.
I own a Rolex Sea Dweller which, due to desirability (for right or wrong reasons), the strength of the Euro against the £, and price rises generally, is now worth significantly more than the list price when I bought it. Is my third, all stainless, sports Rolex and in reality cost me nothing having bought and sold wisely. In fact, I'm actually about £650 in profit and the watch currently on my wrist owes me nothing, so I'm £650 plus the current market value of the Sea Dweller up. Not bad for vanity baubles
I also own a Casio G Shock which I bought for similar reasons. Form and indestructibility.
The only time I will specifically pick one over the other is when I'm boarding/biking etc, and there is a risk of damage. Have worn the Casio to formal functions and the Rolex to the beach. Both tell the time and date and I very rarely use any of the multiple functions of the Casio.
The point is that you can't stereotype everyone based upon your own prejudices.

That's fair enough - it was the waste of money comment that i found strange.
Granted, the iphone 4 camera is better, but compared to what you and I have experience of, its still not great.

I said an appreciation of THE history.
The history of a brand, of a particluar model. The significance of elements of the design. The evolution of the product, the evolution of the movement, the history of the movement.
Granted it doesn't apply to all, but its not rocket science
![Big Grin](images/smilies/biggrin.gif)
And a rather ironic "WTF" given that we are corresponding on a BBS born from the misguided belief that "we" were driving road going rally cars

And yes,get an Auto if you can....enjoy!

Besides when did rolex pioneer the digital display? I bet a G-shock is more accurate and robust that the best mechanical time piece.

As said in the other thread, I can get you 25% on the high street on any watch you want. (I've done it for a few SN members already, perfectly legit
)
If you want to go ahead with the 9% discount then that's up to you but I can get you nearly 3 x that amount off.
See if any take your fancy..

EJ are also Breitling dealers but dont seem to advertise stock on their website.

Do you work in the trade? 25% is a very hefty discount! How do you do it? PM me if you don't want to post on the thread.
Cheers
Nick
Edit - I see EJ are Omega dealers. I. Really like the Seamaster in black at £1280!

Point 2 - Yes, asthetically a £10 copy is similar, but its far from just about the asthetics as I've posted above. And anyway, with fakes you are cheating yourself.
Point 3 - you can get one of these from china for a tenner?

It is cool your folks want to buy you a watch,my family bought me a gold watch for my birthday couple of years ago still wear it with pride. If Swiss Tony is reading this, went to Amesterdam for my birthday her indoors and I found a jewelry shop very expensive. After looking around I bought her a £600 ring the shop owner said if I liked to come back next year she would upgrade the the diamond.I then asked if I was unhappy with my wife could she upgrade her? The lovely Sviss lady said I was a very naughty boy, cant do the accent !!!

This has been done to death so many times on here.
Some people like expensive watches, some don't..............who cares?
I love watches and own 2 Rolex and a Panerai. Hopefully I'll own them forever and eventually pass onto my kids.
I've spent considerably more than my watches cost on buying/tuning 5 scoobies and 2 Skyline GTR's over the years, I've pissed an absolute fortune up the wall with nothing to show for it.
To the OP, buy whatever floats your boat, ***** to all the haters.
I shall now zip up my flame suit and prepare for bombardment
