Default £1000 for a watch - What would you get?

Firstly, I know there are quite a few watch threads going so apologise for another one!

My 30th is coming up and I really want a nice watch from my parents. They said they'll chip in £1000 towards the cost and I can 'top up' with my own cash.

I tried on a large (middle size) Omega Seamaster at a jewellers today. I absolutely loved it! Was in the window for £1280. I asked for a discount and they said they can do it for £1160 which is a 12.5% discount. Is this discount quite good?

Just thought I'd post on here to get some other ideas.

I don't like very chunky watches at all, so anything apart from those types! Prices with suggestions would be greatly appriciated!

Thanks

Nick

I take it you failed your maths exam

Those 2 figures above work out at 9.4% off. I would say you would probably be able to eek it to 10%, but at that level of cost I wouldn't have thought you would get much more.

So do you want a Quartz or an Automatic? Personally I'd not want to part with 1k for a Quartz watch when there is a good choice of quality automatics at that price.

If you want a quartz head over to one of the outlet villages (Bicester for example), they have a Tag outlet and you'll likely pick up a Tag quartz for around £500-£600.

Automatic selection

I've got one of these in your budget.

Another nice example

Popular choice with a bracelet strap

I think we've gone backwards in terms of time piece technology over the last twenty years, now people want to spend £1000 on something that can only tell the time

If you like a bit of class you might like to look at the Baume & Mercier Classima Executive XL Dual Time at around £1375 or try the Ball Engineer Master II Aviator GMT at around £1240. Both are middle market with very good movements and should show a small profit in 10-15 years, if looked after.
However if you can put a bit more dosh into the kitty then go for a good clean second hand Professional all steel Rolex GMT/Submariner or Explorer II (with all it's paper/box tags) as these are still showing good return on the investment and will continue to do so.
Have fun looking around.

Try here.

Sorry, £1120, not £1160! So it is a 12.5% discount - is this a fair amount to discount?

Thanks for the suggestions so far. On my phone at the minute so will have a look tomorrow on my laptop. Cheers.

It's not really a good birthday present though as the money spent on mods will be gone once you sell the car. A watch is for life, not justfor Christmas (or birthday)!!!

Same can go for a house, why not just buy a 1 bed flat or a bedsit?

Your car, why not buy a £100 bangar? Heinz baked beans instead of tesco value, and so on and on and on

£1k on a watch is nothing. You can easily spend that on an exhaust which will just give you a headache, a couple of years later, you flog the car, no return on your £1k spent. You'll still have your watch

As said in the other thread, I can get you 25% on the high street on any watch you want. (I've done it for a few SN members already, perfectly legit)

If you want to go ahead with the 9% discount then that's up to you but I can get you nearly 3 x that amount off.

See if any take your fancy..

EJ are also Breitling dealers but dont seem to advertise stock on their website.

Yeah but there is no functional difference between a 10 quid casio and a 2 grand rolex.

It depends on the function.

Telling the time is one function agreed but another is aesthetic.

The same could be said between a Ford Fiesta and a Bugatti Veyron, both are functional in that they are fit for the purpose of getting you from A-B but I know which one I'd rather have sitting in my garage.

lol how very true.
A friend had one with a touchscreen that worked as a calulator, you wrote the numbers on the screen, was super cool for the day.
Musical alarms too eh, oh how I loved them, imagine hearing one these days

it's as much about the brand as the aesthetic.

i've had 2 rolexes before and would quite like another one, but I can't justify one. they're a waste of money... how ever much i do want one.

(although, much less a waste of money than sports cars )
