You could put a 1990 registration plate on the car if you wanted to, the reg plate doesnt tell you anything regarding this cars age, you need to look at the V5 document to see what year the car was first registered.

If the V5 says 2001 was the date of registration then you should look into why it's not a bugeye.

I think that the OP had been told that the car had gone back onto its 'original' registration following the plate transfer.

If this is a 'Y' plate, I would be looking at why it isn't a bugeye as you have stated.

It may be that the model is down as an 01STi, as you can get odd names on the V5, for example some early import JDM STi's were listed as GL's on some V5's What matters is the registered date, which is in a different place on the V5 document.
