Default Buying a new scooby need some advise pleaasseeeeeee!!!!!

Hello ladies and gents, I went to have a look at my next possible scoob, it a 56 blob eye sti version 8 that looks and drives MINT. Engine pulls well and the gear box is sweet too, only isse with the drive is when I brake there is vibrations in the pedal now the guy has said to me the pads are warped which could be true but either way it bothered me and I thought I'd mention it. Now the main issue which has got me baffled is.....(Deep breath) the car is a v8 blob eye sti but on the log book it says it is a 01 sti???!!! The guy's explantion for this was when he imported it back in 2008 he used a version 7 sva report to get it sva'ed and that is why it is registered as 01...will the dvla let something like this slip by even when it will say the correct year on the jap paperwork when getting it refistered??!.....another question does any one know how easy it is to get a duplicate log book for a car. The owner had a private plat on the car, he bought another car and transfered the private plate to the new car but he had lost the log book for the scooby. Now he claims that because it was a transfer from one car straight to another the dvla didn't ask for log book they simply changed details on log book back to original plate and sent him a new one with the original plate...so just to clear that up he pulled out 2 log books for the car one on the old plate and one on the private plate. Sorry for the poor spelling and grammar I wrote this on my blacberry driving back from the viewing so you can tell how keen I am. Like I said any advice would b appreciated

seems too cheap, imho i would be concerned,i did a private plate transfer a while back and dvla insist that you send them the original docs.seems a bit iffy, but i dont know enough on this plate registration stuff,on the v5...surely it should say 2003 not 2001.

seems cheap for what it is, this always rings bells to me, I would defo get the logbook issues sorted though before handing over any cash. duplicate log books are available from dvla, but think they have some kind of issue number on them so only latest would be valid. Maybe meet him at a Subaru specialist and get it checked for a fee, If he don't want to do that then something not right. Or take someone with you for a 2nd look,

When I bought my jdm it has both the build date which is what the reg letter is based on and a first registered in uk date.

AVOID LIKE THE PLAGUE !

I think you will find that this car is a 2001 'V7' that has had a 'V8' front end conversion ?

I don't know if this is the same one but there was one circulating a while back that had been converted to later spec front end.

The cherished transfer explaination sounds very, very dodgy !

When you transfer a plate, the DVLA want the V5C (log book) for the donor car and the car receiving the number, they then send out a new V5C for both cars once the transfer is done.

If you look on both V5C's that the 'owner' has, they show the date they were issued, you can then check with the DVLA that no subsequent ones have been issued.

If he is the current owner, he should have a V5C with the correct registration and in his name.

The V5C should state the date of first registration / manufacture (Japan) and the date of first registration in the UK.

If the UK date of first registration is showing 2001, it's a bugeye with a blobeye front end and therefore not cheap by any means.

Finally, it may be a very unfortunate coincidence but the the sellers name is Asif (As if ?)

Lots of legit ones out there for less if it is a 2001, the front end conversion would ring alarm bells in case it has been in a 'none recorded' front end crash.

The brakes juddering can be a couple of things really. The brake pads are prone to getting stuck in the calipers a simple remove and clean up can fix that. or the disc itself could be warped, or pistons in the caliper sticking

to be honest mate i didnt check the issue dates of the v5c but i did chek the registration which was rite and i checked the vin number which was same on both v5's. now that you mentioned it i did have suspisions of a front end collision, the drivers side light was slightley out of place as well as the front bumper and there was a crease in the metal bar at the front of the engine bay. and to top it off there was a crack in the timing belt cover its a shame really was hoping to get a bargin.

From my experience you have to feel 100% confident before buying a car, it is at the end of the day a large purchase, When I bought mine from a garage I went to view it, test drove it and there where a few niggles I wanted to check out, In the end I phoned round the garages that had serviced it in the past and slowly confirmed all was ok, then I phoned the garage and made an offer, If it had gone then I would have looked for another, there is nothing worse than making a mistake as when you are really looking for a car it is easy to jump at the first you see, but I am a fussy sod. Bargains are out there but not all cheap cars are bargains.

Ask for the vin number will start GDB-###### from that i will be able to ell you what year your car is.

It does look like a genuine 03 as it has the dials inside the car and the centre consol and steering wheel.

Well the problems your going to encounter to start with is that its not correctly registered, he used a 2001 cars model report to sva a 2003 car, big so its illegally on the road, that would put me off straight away, it does have all the bits for a 2003 car, dccd etc but if you buy it, be warned, as its not correctly registered as the model it should be, it may well mean that any insurance you take out on the car is invalid and the car could be taken from you and scrapped.
I would go find something that has been registered correctly using the correct model report, may cost a little more but you wont have to worry about it not being road legal

The above is incorrect a 2003 car can be registerd using a 2001 model report. The car is registered legally
The car is a blob and model year is 2002 from looking at the vin number.

It cannot be registered using a 2001 model report, the cars are totally different, engines, emissions etc, so it needs a 2003 model report to register it correctly.

Let me find a 2003 model report for you

Taken from VOSA page 12 shows the model reports available for Subaru's, showing 2 different ones from bug to blob.

http://www.dft.gov.uk/vosa/repositor...Feb%202009.pdf

"a" and "b" can use the same (2001/02) but not "c" or "d" which are totally different reports.

Like i said it can be done you just need to have a better understanding of the system. The car is registered properly and even if it wernt once the car is registered and on the DVLA data base VOSA or the DVLA can't do anything as they are supposed to make all thre check prior to registration. However these reports are all absolutete no anyway.

If it's on a 'Y' plate it's a 2001 ?

Surely the DVLA don't just allocate an age related plate based on the model report ?

What is a blob eye doing on a 2001 reg ?

It all still looks like a lot of hassle, even if it is a mistake by the DVLA.

How would you get them to put it onto a 2002/03 plate ?

Would they want the appropriate model report ?

If it 'feels' wrong, it generally is !

The plate year is taken off the first date of registering the car on the road anywhere in the world. On the V5 document you get two registered dates on an import, the date of first registration in country of origin (i.e Japan in this case) and the date of first registration in the UK, the first is used to give you the earliest date the reg plate can take.

So for example the car may be registered in the UK in 2008, but be first registered in Japan in 2001, then it will be given a 2001 or earlier registration plate. This is to stop people putting a newer reg onto an old car, same as with a UK car which cant carry a newer plate date than first registered.

Part of the SVA is to give the date of first registration, so this can be carried onto the V5 and be used for your MOT date and plate numbering.

I realise that the date of first registration in the country of origin dictates the age related plate issued in the UK.

The point I was making is that if it was first registered in Japan in 2001, it is unlikely to be a genuine Blobeye ?

That would help to explain why it looks too cheap (for a 2003 Blobeye STi at any rate)
