" i put a wanted thread on here"
this is the bit that bothers me. You got in touch to punt on a cream crackered engine. I doubt a melted piston sounds like its "missing a bit" which might be an easy fix.
Not trying to persecute you and putting the number up isn't right but to be honest it sounds like you tried to pull a swifty and should refund the money.

So to sum up, we have the OP saying he paid £1000 for a fully functional engine, or on the other hand £300 for a knackered one.
Why on earth would he want another knackered engine when he was buying to drop it in as a replacement?
And is it purely a coincidence that the engine when examined had a holed piston and oil pissing out as per the engine asked about in the other thread?
If i were a betting man I think I know which version of this sad tale I'd put my money on.

So how much did you actually pay for the engine £1,000 or £300, cos theres quite a bit of difference there, someone is not telling the truth, and if your trying to make out you have paid a lot more than you have then thats not very nice either mate. Not that im to consernd as its not my money or engine.

in the OP'S first post he states that he is £1000 down i assume this is for the travel and fitting costs as well as purchasing the engine.

hi guys,
tomtit ripping me off is one thing but calling me a lier is another,i payed £300 for the engine but had to pay £250 for it to be fitted and £100 for oil,oil filter, plugs, power steering fluid, then another £250 for it to be removed,£80 petrol to fetch the engine,
I SWEAR ON MY LADS LIFE HE SAID THE ENGINE WAS A GOOD RUNNER...
he said he took the engine out coz he entered a rally and couldnt have a turbo engine so fitted a 2.5 non turbo, ive got all the txts tom and i had ur word now all i have is regrets..

concidering scooby2100 has paid all that money out to fit a duff enigne i think its only right that tomtit should refund. why would scooby2010 pay out all that money to fit it if he didnt think it was a good engine!
#102
That said, in this case I think a refund is due.
IMHO both have been stupid, both should learn, exchange money / engine back and move on.
#104
Well, I would imagine most users of this forum know you don't get much Impreza engine for 300 quid! One thing I have learned in my years of Subaru ownership is that doing it on the cheap doesn't work like it can with other cars.
That said, in this case I think a refund is due.
IMHO both have been stupid, both should learn, exchange money / engine back and move on.

if you dont get a refund maybe strip the engine down, if its from an old scoob there would be a good possibility that it has a closed deck block which will be worth a few quid
#106
i think you have been done mate. hes now trying to blag out of it,if the truth is that he sold it too you in full working order, then u are due a refund,he should do the decent thing.
#107
people say that u shouldnt try the cheap route, but some people have no choice due to funds, doesnt mean their not aloud their dream, i was 21 when i got my scoob, have had no end of trouble with her, takes me ages to save up for parts lol, so somtimes you gotta take risks, ie buying a cheap motor to get it running again, its just a shame people take advantage of this fact!!
hope you get it sorted though dude, and if tomtit did say it was a good runner.. he should do the good thing and refund you!!

First of all sorry to hear about this Scooby2010, but i dare say you're not the first or the last to fall for it as people tend to just 'trust' that the engines going to be ok. Personally if i was after a second hand engine (instead of having a rebuild) the ONLY way i'd buy one is after it seeing + hearing it running, plus seeing the service history etc etc.
Unfortunately there's too many thieving little t**ts out there that want your cash to rely on trust alone IMHO... I appreciate this doesn't help you now but hopefully it'll help you buy a decent one second time round.
+1 I agree Nick, although he can't just take it lying down either as i'd definately feel a bit peeved a grand down with nowt to show for it..
..... Although i wouldn't advise going round with a shovel or practising fire startin either!! ..He would win and would still be a grand up, and just to add insult to injury you'd be doing the jail-house rock!!
Your only course of action IMHO is the small claims court, BUT you could use the fact that its well documented on here to your advantage...
i.e print the posts and the WANTED advert and put them together as a log, in date order to help create a story for your case that will strengthen what you have explained.
This should start from his original post where he is asking for help regarding his K reg impreza with an oil leak, and his mechanic diagnoses a melted piston, stating dates and times of the posts, then the wanted advert followed by dates and times of your phone calls to him (use your phone bills for this) and/or emails, and also the date you picked it up.
Then finish with the date you took it to your garage (see if he'll do you a simple headed letter explaining whats wrong with the engine), which will show the same problem melted piston.
Armed with this sort of evidence you should find they will find it hard to side with him.
It'll probably take a bit of time and a bit of sorting out but surely this is a better alternative than being a grand out of pocket???

I read in one of tom tha **** posts that he had a specialist look at the engine when it was in "his" motor and was told that a piston had melted, i even post the link in this thread! You are far too stupid to cover your own tracks when you had previously plastered all over these forums that your car was running like a sack of **** and then post up that it was knackered lol. You really should check through your own post history and then realise the error of your ways and cough up the poor mans refund before karma bites you in the ****

Does this website have no moderation? Firstly, posting phone numbers is a bit of a no-no but i understand why it was done. Secondly, there seems to be a lot of theft on this site or at least deception. The fact that the membership fees are completely OTT compared to some of the bike forums leads me to believe that this site exists as a pure profit-making entity? If i am wrong then feel free to put me straight but i know from being a moderator on a biker site for sometime that FoI requests and legal threats carry an awful lot of weight even in cyberspace.
My point for the poor bloke who has lost a lot of money on a duff engine that was clearly duff to begin with is that, as someone said earlier, there is enough evidence to take this to the small claims court. Good luck fella and someone feel free to enlighten me as to how this website runs?
PS I have already bought three items on here and am very happy with the marketplace. All transactions were quick, painless and honest, but there seem to be a number of "ripped off" threads that are putting me off doing any more business on here.

I didnt mean the sales thing, however I guess that helps too. I meant the amount of time and effort he/she has put into their username. someone that has been on here for 10 years and x amount of posts and known to all is less likely to rip someone off thats been here 2 months and 40 posts if you get me.

As an outside observer it is clear to all that the engine was known to be a dud.
The ex owner of the engine saying he was unaware of the true condition of the engine because it was in a car without MOT or TAX doesn't sit well - I am as straight as they come, but I would have driven the car 'around the block' to see what it was like!
On the other hand, £300 for a Scooby Engine is cheap and indicates a dud in all honesty ... the willingness of the seller to drop from £500 to £300 also points to a duff engine. But the buyer should have resisted the 'bargain'!
The buyer was taken in by a bargain offer ... and the seller took £300 for a known knackered engine.
Considering that the seller has admitted the engine means nothing to him, then the seller should refund the £300 and allow the buyer to keep the engine. The buyer can repair and fit. In this way the seller doesn't have to pay compensation (the costs involved) and the buyer gets his initial £300 back.
That would seem the way forward. A court would want to see some movement from both sides ... the side who refuses to move will get the order of the court against them. If the court finds in favour of the buyer then the full costs will be awarded. However, the fact remains that the engine was cheap and the court will need to consider whether a knackered engine of this type is worth £300.
I believe that the court will come to the conclusion that we are talking about an engine worth around £300, in the state it was sold in.
It's always better to compromise and I hope it can be sorted.
