Which brings me back to my point; these gubbins are detraction not an improvment.

I have to agree there - 120ds are the worst. Still like the pokier ones like the 130i and 135i but they are all minging.

I disagree; 116i and 118d drivers are far worse.

The E46 330i has a 3.0 straight 6 and produced 228hp achieves 29mpg combined but emits 218g/km but does 0-60 in 6.5, 50-75mph in 7.1 & 155mph (151.5hp / tonne)
Of course all those fuel consumption figures need to be taken with a very large pinch of salt. Don't get me wrong, very happy with our E91, but BMW official figures are somehow much more optimistic than other manufacturer's when you compare with "normal" driving. They aren't thirsty, they simply quote far superior fuel consumption compared to rivals, but actually deliver similar or only marginally better.

Anyway, moving back to thread....

Little tricks in the mapping, at the cost of driveability and response. A couple of manufacturers have been caught out using ECU programming where the car detects the car is been driven under EU test scienarios and reverts to a map optimised for it (same with MOT fast idle tests). Its not all about MPG, its also about sneaking the car into a slightly lower VED tax band.

Bit like the 0.5bar boost on the old UK imprezas if one stays in 2nd gear for too long.

Its all a bit futile IMO; If you buy an M-car you don't buy it for mpg, co2, VED band, insurance costs or it to be weighed down with tons of standard extras. The idiots demading such things should be buying an SE or an M-sport.

Bit like when Porsche fitted power steering to the 964, same with the NSX, both cars never needed it as there was very little weight on the front axle. But unfortunately; the masses don't have any arm muscles. So what the posers want, the posers got; at the expensive of almost ruining the feedback on two of the top sub £70K driver's car.

Totally agree. My "40+mpg" 335d is never above very low 30s. Same with most other models. They are very good on fuel but nowhere near what BMW states. Impressive emissions though but again, I wonder what conditions the figures are obtained in?!

I used to get 33mpg + every fill of my slightly ropey E36 318is. Do they still have the little stop on the throttle about an inch down? Driving to the stop it could go on forever on a gallon.

Back to it, the manual box and relatively small dimensions will defiantly sell this car. Boost is an added sweetener!
