What on earth do you do to a Scoob to make it need new engines and gearboxes etc? My STi was very reliable in spite of having been well tweaked up.

TVR T350C - unfortunately it lived up to its reputation!

Counteless problems with the electrics - mostly oil pressure sensors, speedo fault, window alignment issues, steamed headlights, bodywork problems, and ultimately an imminent engine failure ...

... still wish I hadn't sold it though

I bought Wifey a Phase 1 306 GTi6.

I can't say it's been overly unreliable, more so that it's cost a lot to maintain. Not surprising considering it's coming up to 15 years old.

But in its defence, I bought it as a project-car.

So far -

Usual consumables - tyres etc

Headgasket done. Re-skimmed and had porting done too.
New starter motor.
New exhaust
re-welded engine mounts
new suspension bushes
new arbs
new radiator & water pump.
ENDLESS thermostats
Leaking pipework

Gearbox & clutch ok (so far!)
Electrics for the French POS aren't too bad - the only thing that doesn't work is the courtesy light from the passenger door!

Still got the heater matrix to do, but with any luck I'll sell it/p-ex or it will finally die before I have to do that nightmare job!!

So nothing too bad in all fairness.

Still goes like a pocket rocket, and Wifey loves it. She wants a Merc C class coupe diesel for her new job...... mpg and cabin is much better

My first car... a 998cc Austin Metro...

Seals went on the clutch cylinders
Burnt a valve out
Distributor stopped distributing
Started running like an (even worse than usual) bag of crap in the wet (that took some finding - turned out to be a hairline crack in the distributor cap)
Used about a litre of engine oil for every tank of fuel (though the handy thing was that, as Metros had the gearbox in the sump, you could feel in the gearchange when it needed more oil )
The courtesy light regularly stuck on & drained the battery
The cills rotted away
The front offside wing rotted away
The front offside wing rotted some more

Probably plenty more, but that'll do for now.

i had to carry water for the perpetually failing radiator in my first audi 80 gls.

For some reason I thought my second audi 80 1.8 had a sealed radiator and drove around for a year with it completely empty.

[touch wood] Including these 2, I've never broken down or had a puncture in 20 years of driving and 11 cars.

Mk 1 950 fiesta, ran it with twin-weber downdraught, no airbox, 4-2-1 Peco manifold and exhaust, no airbox and 2 degrees advance of timing. Was quick enough to outrun some slightly bigger stuff and would not be too embarrassed by XR2s of the same era. Hated cold starts because of the lack of airbox and eventually melted a piston

Great fun and started me on the rocky road to modding induced financial ruin

I always wondered this when I had mine. In three years mine popped two exhaust sensors and fubar'd one wheel bearing (my fault, WRX hubs aren't strong enough for RE070's). I knew one guy that did THREE gearboxes and TWO engines in less than two years and he still couldn't hold a candle to me on either road or track Drive them well and they will be reliable and very fast with even standard or slightly increased power. Drive them like a loon and they will fail, even moreso the more they are mod'd to compensate for the drivers inability. I've had to wait at the end of Strines for many minutes for 400bhp cars to catch my old 260bhp WRX, and the same cars invariably spent more time at Scoobyclinic than in the owners driveway

Most reliable car i have ever had = the current ZS180

Had it a year and a half now, nothing has gone wrong with it bar a clip on the CV boot so i did not feel too bad in adding a cable tie to clamp it back up

I did get an annoying squeak from the door once

It has not had an easy life either, it gets thrashed from cold and it failed its MOT because a rear bulb had blown
