it only needs re-mapping if anything major is altered...and a charged air filter/cone filter changes the breathing characteristics of the engine enough to make it safer/worthwhile to get it mapped correctly... with a CAI they can run lean on full boost... which will kill the engine.

Getting it de-catted (like your mate's EVO) wil also require a re-map... otherwise you'd have boost spiking, engine warning lights and all sorts.

£600 for an Ecutek map includes the initial license, so any further "tweeks" needed (if you change the injectors/turbo etc) will be £300 odd..

An alternative is non ecutek mappers, who do not have that license to add to their fee... as a result, a map costs £350odd and any further mapping is £150

The trick is to get all your planned mods done in one go..then only need to fork out one re-map fee.
All that info is really useful, cheers for that!

If I'm honest I'm not really planning any mods, but I wouldn't mind getting it mapped once just to ensure that everything is running as it should do. If I've understood correctly, the first (and hopefully only) map will cost me £600?

There was a group buy for Bob Rawle (BR dev) running not long back...

I think he was offering a SN discount of £580 odd (not sure on exact price)

Normal Ecutek fee is between £550 and £650 (depending on mapper) for first map.

JGM and Bob are the 2 I'd recommend for Ecutek mappping

Dunc from RaceDynamix if you're not worried about it being an Ecutek map and want to save yourself £300odd

Cheers!

If it gets too expensive then I'll drop a rover 111 metro engine in and be done with it ;-)

Hiya Ash!

I paid £11,000 for it, with 32,000 miles and its a 2005 (05) registered car.

I didn't negotiate with the dealer, which I possibly could have done, but If I'm honest I just really couldn't be arsed. I wanted to pay my money and take a car, no hassle!

Noooo I don't want to mod it, I just want to drive it! I don't drive enough miles per year to make it worthwhile modding really, only about 4000 a year! And most of those are "Im bored lets go out for a drive" type miles!

I only wanted to know about the mods etc so I know if the car is going to be ok to use straight away or if I have to get it re-mapped for safety's sake!

welcome mate hope all goes well for you with it....
I would do a power run asap should be around 50 -80 quid that will tell you what power and whats been done as a k and n is never a first mod on a scooby of this type only when it gets around 400hp so just make sure before you do anything.
If the power comes back near standard then put the old more than capable filter back on...
I also wouldnt de cat it if its full prodrive one on go cat back and youll still pass mot and get a good exhaust made to suit it will beat the mates evo exhaust note hands down ...
Good luck mic

Thanks very much everyone for all the good advice and hints and tips that you've given me so far!

I cant believe how quick the car is, and going from one with pretty much no power, to one with power on tap, is amazing!

I now understand what turbo lag is, having never driven a turbo car I never knew what people meant before. It seems tho, drive in the right gear, and it isn't a big problem

One quick question I do have is that the back left hand side of the car is making a knocking/bumping sound at very low speeds when either just starting to drive off, or slowing down and almost at a stop. It sounds like it maybe a suspension issue? Is this knocking noise a common problem, and if so, what is it likely to be? I did find that the jack was stored in a compartment next to the body panel in the boot on the left hand side and it was loose, but this wasn't the problem.

Thanks again for all your input so far, what an amazing car it is!!!!

as above the shockers are bad for knocking on scoobys,

no point in buying the same again as its a common fault on all subarus,

a lot seem to be goin on to coilovers as theres a few group buys which makes them a better prospect than buying shocks at the same price almost

Ah thats brilliant, cheers for the quick responses guys, much appreciated and reassuring!

Im thinking shock absorbers probably aren't covered under the extended warranty I bought from the dealer since I would guess they're pretty much a "consumable" item and it would natural wear and tear, but I'll have a check on my policy later.

£150 or so doesn't sound like its much of a problem so I can get that sorted pretty quickly.

Thanks again!!!

Hi Tom!

I bought it second hand from a private dealer. Does this mean that I would need to go back to the private dealer, do I need to contact the people from the warranty company of the warranty that my dealer sold me, or do I take it to Subaru direct?

Its an 05 plate so 5 years old.

if you've only just got the car, i'd take it back and quote "not fit for purpose" if they get a bit funny. It's probably no covered on a private dealer warranty but you dont expect to buy a car and have to spend money on it from the off do you??

I once bought a car with an egg in one of the tyres... took it back to the dealer the same day and he replaced the tyre free of charge.

Got to be worth a go

I would take it back to the dealer, £11000 and within a week your having to spend money on it isnt good.

Ok problem solved, I'm going to get some new shockers on the back so cheers for all the advice there!

I've been reading about AVC-R boost controllers, and I've got a few questions actually.

1) What do they do that the ECU in the car doesn't already do?
2) Who would be able to set it up?
3) Does the car need to be mapped again once the boost controller is installed and set up?

Hope you don't mind me asking too many questions, but I'm learning loads and really appreciate all the help!

Cheers!
Chris
