2008-2010 2.5ltr Engine Failures
#421
Just to add to this the MD states in this interview that Subaru Uk would add a datalogger to the car at there cost and extend the warranty, I enquired about this having recently had a short engine fitted and with my warranty about to expire was concerned about a reoccurrence, needless to say Subaru have declined to fit a logger and extend my warranty. Looks like the MD's making offer that the directors are going to honour.....
warranty !

I was going to get Omega pistons (approx £80 more than Cossy ones), but sadly was seduced by the discount on Cossy pistons. In the grand scheme of things £80 is negligible for what I think are better pistons. No doubt there are experts who will give advice based on much greater experience than my little dabbles. Ask on 22B forum where even more experts seem to conrgegate than Snet.

They will give you a range of "the top 5" from which you can get the consensus of opinion !!

Rob QQ for u then
In the most basic term and cheapist route, what do you have to do to get the engine to how most of us would have expected Subaru to have done.
Am i right in saying just a straight piston swap to a set of cosworth ones ? anything else ? remap ?
If you didnt go cosworth, is there any even better ones ?
Also with you changing the pistons do we then open up anything else to risk ?

Mahle seem a good choice, theres omega/cp/wossna
I'd use other than Cosworth pistons as they tend to be noisey - had them in the classic and in the hatch and I reckon its the pistons causing the phantom det I have + they were audibly noisey in the 2 litre when cold. In hindsight I should have gone for "better" pistons rather than the 15% discount on Cosworth parts

Rob for hatch with PPP how much would such change cost to ensure car is in decent shape and not under risk of playing up which seems to have happened to many?

I can't comment on the classic at all, we never had anything to do with it. I'd suggest being noisy from cold could suggest clearance issues.
I didn't think your new engine was noisy at all.
Phantom det is an interesting theory, but that may be all it is.

Hi Alan,
The Classic engine was only running 430BHP (common place today but quite good in 2002) built by Townend garage Carnforth, and in hindsight, having seen the life of that engine, it is clear they did an excellent job. It was slappy when cold and back then I was told Cossie pistons had that reputation.
I am very pleased with the new engine that you built - the spec you suggested was what I wanted and your prices/deals helped my budget to include some extra bits.
I cannot hear any unusual noises from this engine, (even when cold, so thats different from the Classic) but the det sensor is picking some noise up that it thinks is det (even tho it is not detting) - my simplistic theory was that as the pistons have most "play" out of all the moving parts in the short engine, any "det"/vibration noises would most likely come from them. No-one has come up with concrete idea as to what is causing it, so I am speculating it may be to do with pistons or CR - no doubt the cause will be found in time.
When we discussed spec at the beginning, you wanted to use low 8's compression ratio, but I wanted 9 ish as I had talked to other builders as well (when deciding who I wanted to build my engine), and they were impressed with the advantages they found with the 9.2:1 CR. So I went with that. Time has shown that your low 8's CR preference is the way to go, but as I found when building the Classic, different experts tell you different things - you make your choice and then time tells you if you were right. If I do another build it will not be using 9:1 CR !!
As you say, other, many similar engines use Cossie pistons and don't have phantom det, so it may well be I am blaming the wrong suspect.
Vibration from valves at certain revs due to slight differences in springs/valves

The papers are suggesting this morning that the Impreza is to be dropped and replaced by a 37MPG 2.0 turbo 4 x 4 type vehicle.
Looks like the ill fated 2.5 boxers days may be numbered.

im hoping it is cos i really love this car, fast as hell and great to drive, and i dont get bored not like my ***** audi or functional car as people call it, Lifes to short to have functinal its all about smiles

If you have a look over on iwsti couple of reported 2011 engine failures, would guess its just a matter of time before they start going pop or we find out what modification subaru have made to compensate for all us idiots modifying them, not servicing them and driving them at 160 mph everywhere.

i know of plenty 2011 sedans that have gone bust. The problem is the detonation caused by the mapping. The car is mapped for 98 - 100 octane, i'm not sure, so here in SA the break quite comfortably on the 95 octane. the solution is simple. remap your car. my 2010 hatchback is a really enjoyable car after it. gained 36wkw and 76wNm. and it's not boosting higher, software was just optimised to suit local condtions and did i mention my throttle response it great which combats the lag nicely. if there are guys here that can honestly say they have always run the right octane and taken care of the car and it still broke, i'd like to hear their story.

I've religiously used shell vmax only one batch of bp soi I'm one the new 320r has a new 97ron sticker on the cap
It may be the case in sa though as your 95 Ron so u need to be extra careful
But a bit daft the dealers in sa knowing the fuels poor to sell it

Seems to be plenty still popping pistons/ringlands, including the latest 2011 cars.

Hey Ted
What's the octane rating of Shell Vmax? My car has a 95 stcker in the cap!! LOL..those don't mean a thing man. When I took my car for a remap, it obviously had 95 in, and I could see on the dyno graph how it detonated and brought the power down to protect itself. But 500 rpm higher and it brought the full boost back up. So stupid, it doesn't keep the power down like german cars, and that's why the subarus break man. **** mapping.
Tell me about your car. It's a 2011 sedan right? And you put the proper fuel and waited for engine temp before punching it and so on... took good care... and it still broke on you???

Oooo i can post in here now, seeing as mine let go at 44k. likewise always put Vpower in since i got it and checked oil weekly, rarely hit the limiter, never pushed when cold. however mine let go amongst other things. all in the capable hands of Rob84

ok, sorry to hear that. i've spoken to many people about this and it seems it was mostly from 06 to 08. is Rob84 going to build you a forged engine?
#449
yeah its currently getting bored out and head skimmed, but then he'll put in the forged goodies. everything barr conrods atm, although might put them in aswel, not sure im going to go high enough power wise to justify the conrods.
