vw polo bluemotion - 420 miles on half a tank on a long run to scotland and back, downside though is the pdf filter which gets blocked if used regularly on short trips, motorway driving though it is fantastic, long gear ratios, will still give 50+ mpg at just over 85 mph
citroen c4 1.6 hdi lightweight french tat, but, surprisingly economical, be prepared to get bored PDQ though.

My Wife's car is a VW Bora Tdi 150 which returns 50mpg in mixed use and is very handy on the motorway, it's just a shame that the chassis is no fun. Cheap car tax as well.

The Forester XT gets under half that mpg but I just don't care.

1996 Peugeot 306 TD S, got 713 miles out of a tank once and was always close to that. Got rid just before christmas.

Great little car.

My Forester 2.0D XC - 45.9MPG average since new (now at 24K miles), best recorded tankful 54mpg. Next best, a Nissan X-trail 2.2D (2003) model, regularly did 43-45. Worst recently, a Toyota Verso T180 2.2D - 28MPG on a good day by the time I got rid of it!

Ive got an old escort diesel to run around in> cheap as chips and seems to go forever on a gallon. Mine happens to be a van which saves me loads of hassle when going to the dump etc and cheaper to insure than a car i found to my suprise
