What's the most economical car you've owned?
 

Just seeing what you guys have owned that have been the most economical, need a new daily so seeing what's out there.

Citroen AX diesel, not far off about 70mpg on a good run, but it was a dire car:eek:

expalin bud? 1.5 non turbo beasty, made out of tin foil aye?

Depends on your budget.

Picked it up cheap as a stop gap, radiator split and the rear wheel bearings collapsed. Replaced the rad, but left the bearings and drove around at about 50mph max. 5-door and good mpg though so an ideal runabout for the family. Not great for longer runs though - too small

1984 VW Polo 1.3. Paid £200 for it...1 owner, FSH.

40mpg even when giving it some abuse driving it flat out on the motorways with only 4 gears. Would get 46mpg if I took it easy.

Went quite well once I sorted the ignition and fueling. Handling was scary though.

I'm currently driving a Citroen C4 1.6 diesel as my daily driver. It's averaged 47mpg in the 23K miles I've had it, and I get 60+mpg on a relaxed long run (70mph on motorway). It's a good commuting car as it has a semi-auto gearbox (with flappy paddles and a sequential shifter if you fancy being a bit more involved). £35 tax as well.

I'm just about to trade it in for a BlueMotion Golf, which should be even more efficient (the Citroen is 120g/km CO2, the Golf is 109).

Peugeot 307 2.0Tdi 50mpg, cheap insurance..... bloody boring to drive and look at though... cheap to buy 2nd hand though.

Unsure of the Gov's plans for taxing autogas, but if you ask me this is best for a daily runner at the mo. (hydrogen pumps are in my area yet)

neva thought of the citreon c4, thought they'd be to expensive, but they're pretty cheap!

Peugeot 406 1.9hdi estate, 75 to the gallon on a run. 7 seats or more boot space than you can imagine for all your scoobie parts :thumb:

SEAT Arosa 1.4 TDi (PD) drove from Cardiff to Catterick on less than half a tank. Averaged about 65 - 70 MPG

Not known for having economical cars but the best I had was a phase 2 Clio 1.8i 16v (the 200cc smaller brother of the Williams) Similar peformance and good looks, 60 in 8 IIRC but always returned around 38mpg regardless of the thrashing. Cheap as chips to buy, handle like on rails but a bugger to service. Only sold it as it didn't have air and I'm getting old LOL

Thats a good point I was thinking an Oil burner, but then there is a 106 rallye or simular, never owned one but apparantly loads of fun and very cheap to run. They are stripped out for light weight and small engined offering high mpg and cheap insurance. plenty fun as a passanger once, but then that was 8 years ago so im there might not be any left if the young'ns have had a spree on them... just like they did with the VTR/VTS etc.....lol

Both cars I've owned averaged 50mpg but one was petrol and the other diesel. VW Lupo 1.0 that was abused being my first car, and a ZR TD which fell apart if you thought about abusing it.

When I met my bf he was running a remapped 2005 TDI Golf 105bhp @ 135bhp and could average 76mpg on a long run. Also went like stink! Not bad to drive either but felt like a tank.

His current car has also been remapped to 200bhp from 170bhp JTD Alfa GT Cloverleaf. Normally averages 46+mpg on a long run, looks lovely and drives beautifully.

Lots of options with remapping diesel cars :thumb:

The most economical car i've had is a mk4 golf gt tdi 110bhp was returning 60mpg loved that car.

Smart for two

Most economical car was a Peugeot 205 1.7 Turbo Diesel....that thing would have run on fresh air. It was that easy on fuel i only ever put £10 in at a time :lol1::lol1:

Best value for money car though has to be the Toyota Carina E petrol im using for the work horse at the minute. Bought it December 2007 for £450 110k miles on the clock with 6 months tax and test....still driving it every day and i've spent nothing worth on it all apart from tyres etc....absolutely bulletproof Jap Scrap at its best....oh and i still change the oil in it every 5k miles as a treat :luxhello::luxhello:

My current scoob, regularly get 47-48 mpg. Have seen it read 57 mpg!!

MK II Golf GTI 16V with i138 bhp at the wheels, managed 40+ mpg at a steady 56 mph. 'Twas good enough for me back in the 90's.

P.S. My Imp managed nearly 50 mpg @ 56 mph, but I doubt you'd find one now.... well one with 110 bhp anyway. :lol1:

pug 206 or 207 1.4D is very cheap to run, with £30 road tax and 60 mpg.

It uses less fuel than anything else I've owned!

Or when i was into starlets turbos/glanzas had 3 of them quick lil cars and 35mpg

I've just bought a 1.5 vtec e civic on an n reg for £400. Drives like new and gives me 200 miles for around £20! Bargain daily runners the older hondas are.

Fabia vRS. Mapped to 180/290.

Would get 50mpg all day long, with spirited driving. If taking it easy, saw in excess of 60mpg.

i had a 1.1 Citroen C2 a few years back that seemed to run for miles!

My current daily driver is a Fiat Panda 100hp, and i have to say, its probably the best car i have ever owned.

Has enough pace to excite on B roads, handles really well, give around 43mpg over the course of a tank of petrol, cheap to insure, enough toys to play with, and in my eye's is a really good looking little car.

And best bit, you can pick them up new (well, pre-reg) for around 7.5k. Good value in my eyes.

Oh and being a Fiat, people say they fall apart, but mine hasnt missed a beat in 2 years, 18,000 miles and even a 10:03 lap of the Ring (not bad 2 up in a 1.4 lol)

Fabia vRS does 60+mpg with the other half driving, still does 50+mpg with me driving, even when giving it some it never does less than 45mpg.

never had anything thats averaged more than 26-28mpg, scared to in case I get used to it. But then again am lucky and only do about 7k per year.

Fabia vRS, custom code, forge front mount, turbo back miltek, green panel filter, bigger turbo..247bhp 370lbs and 50mpg all day long. had 69.9 at a constant 50mph down the m1 through roadworks. bad thing was wet weather and FWD was undrveable. wheelspins at 80mph were not good.

The one and only bullet proof Nissan Micra.

A great car - the ultimate in budget motoring. Sometimes I have had one ankle deep in rubbish parked next to the imaculate sccob.

The new ones have renault engines in ...so I guess they wont be in the same league in a few years.

306 HDI. Bought it to run around in whilst the Subaru was in for some work doing. Four years on I still have it and I just cant bring myself to get shut. The three Subarus I had in the interim have come and gone. It's not only economical but quite nippy with the remap it's had and aside from the cambelt never once had to replace anything and it has flown through every MOT.
