Maybe you might be right in some terms such as driving like a grandad off boost, then ye..maybe any oil would do. Wheras on the other hand there are cars that are seriously boosted which are driven with marbles and need the 'expensive' oil.

Where is opie oil when you need him.

i have to agree with pete on this one. if this oil is used in a standard car on the road then it will give no problems at all.....even on full boost

Excuse me .... Subaru recommend the Oil I recommend - there is no disagreement there!

Subaru build some seriously fast hard wearing cars ... they recommend 10W-40 Semi ... and that should be good enough for anyone who loves these cars!

Expensive Oils are expensive because the gullible pay top money for the 'percieved' benefits - it's one of the best cons of the modern age!

ps.

You made your point.

Agreed. Halfway through.

Lots of oil and filter changes when required?

Now! Shut up!

I actually agree with Pete for a change , if you are running a standard road car then that grade of oil assuming it is changed every 6 months is fine.

I am changing the engine oil at the weekend but for my slightly modified car with further mods coming before June I am using Mobil fully synthetic Syn S 5w40, I change the engine oil every 6 months regardless of mileage. The gearbox and axle oils are changed every 12 months again regardless of mileage with Castrol fully synthetic 75w90.

I consider it to be good insurance - better more frequent oil changes than a costly rebuild later.

Oh and Opie Oils have some cracking deals on as well.

Oh!!!

And why don't you just check your oil and topup accordingly.

EVERY 6 MONTHS??? I could have went through a couple of gallons by then.

Oil changes are a nonsense. It is the filter that needs changed.Every 6 Months. (Maybes)

If you are topping up reg. Then, why throw away?

You will have probably Topped up enough to non substantiate an oil change.

what!^ even the best filter in the world is not enough to prevent the build up of carbon in the oil.
anyways if you are topping up that much your engine is ****ed!

You are so wrong and naive it beggars belief.

You must be the only person in the world who changes the oil filter and not the oil as well, as has been said you will get foreign particles in the oil.

As for having to continually top up the oil, you must have a serious engine problem which I suggest you investigate.

D'ya know what? Car is fine. That is from a 4 litre capacity sump.

Just bought the car and didn't check the oil??? My Bad!!

if the car needs topping up so much then its either leaking it or burning it! neither of which are a good thing.

And so?

What do you think Oil actually does?

How much lubricates.

In my estimation. Probably No more than a teaspoonful.

The rest is purely to cool the returning oil and make any impurities more diluted.

What I did deduce was.

The the amount of oil that the oil pump could Chaotically induct.Dependant on acceleration /deceleration.

However since the oil had recently been changed. There was a more than good chance that it was "clean".

So Clean oil. Pumped where it should go. With an amount no more than a teaspoonful required???? Pressure?? If it is above Boost. Then why should I be concerned?

Do I Hear a mighty Chortle?

I have the car.

It is fine.

Drive it if you will.

Then tell me why I am a lucky sod?

Let me get this straight - you bought a car that you had to top up with 3 litres of oil? Did you check anything on the car before buying it?

And yes I do speak from a position of experience and knowledge, I am not just a keyboard warrior.

I also take it that you always check your oil level when the oil warning light comes on and not before?

Perhaps you can learn something on here... Like change your oil and filter at the same time.

Of Course I am an Idiot.

I did not check oil level when buying. But I did check the Service History.

What I didn't see was that the customer "Check the oil". at the bottom of the Service notes.

Besides. Of course I took it for granted. that the service included a full OIL AND FILTER CHANGE.

It did. But only before the customer had intimated an oil leak. (Which was cured and I cannot find any leak.)

Regardless of this truth. Would it be fair to say. Oil changes/Topups/Filterchanges. Are manufacturers requirements as regards Warrenty Claims.

However. Bear no relation to what happens in the "Real World". and can be excused for knowledge. When the warrenty has expired?

No they would assume that it would be regularly checked by the owner, as I am sure that the owners handbook does tell you how to periodically check the oil, coolant levels, tyre pressures etc.

Well you know what assuming is the mother of all **** ups...

If the oil is not leaking out of the engine then I think it is fair to say that the oil is being either burnt by the engine or it is in your cooling system. There may be a few other possible reasons but the two I mention above are most likely in the event of oil use and no leaks.

No oil top ups / oil changes (inc filter) are good practice and manufacturer recommendations, as well as being required to maintain any warranty that may still be in place on the vehicle.

As for "Real World" if anything I over service my car, being as the annual mileage is less than 5,000 and it has two engine oil changes and one gearbox and axle oil change every year.
