Personally i would still work, just increase the staffing levels a bit so i had to work a bit less....

Do many SN peeps do the lottery?
Never put the lottery on in my life tbh, although the missus is part of some syndicate at work, i once had 1 to many pound coins in the money bag when i was doing some business banking at the post office, so spent it on a scratch card while i was waiting for the bloke to sort the rest of the bags, never won never bothered ever again

You could easily live off 20k a year..

In fact many people live off a lot less..

I i had a million quid i would give up work tommorrow..And live quite happily till i popped my clogs..

Age 41.....

You've got to factor in 'voids' periods where each house is not rented (say 10% / year) and maint (say another 10% per year) and then Gorgon brown's retirement fund = 60 - 20% = 48k, less 40% = 28.8k / year

I could easily live off the interest on 400k (to be clear owning no property, just renting) - ski for the winter (4 months, flats in good resorts are easily available) and then rent somewhere in the UK / Spain or wherever for the other months.

Age 47, retirement fund - significantly more than 400k

I chose to work as I enjoy it and the extras I can spend my salary on

Thanks

The problem comes after a while, no work = boredom, entertainment = spends.

No.

Interesting, this.

Was looking at this very scenario yesterday with Wifey (hadn't seen the post)....

It turns out that one of the "local" hairdressers won 1.3 million in the last couple of weeks, and needless to say, has got everybody "talking" (shame some green-eyed idiots vandalised her car

Anyhoo, to answer the question, IMHO, if you're single, then probably yes.

However, we did the sums based on both of us giving up work, and we reckoned we'd run out of money by the time we retired.

That's working on a direct replacement for our current incomes. And of course, no financial investments.
No real point in looking at those in this scenario - most of the public wouldn't look either, as it's entirely speculation.

No doubt, it would be very wise to invest it in *something* but as to what, most would probably go for the safe bet -

start of with paying off the mortgage
holiday
new house
cars
gifts to family

then invest.

My BIGGEST concern, and Wifey said the same, what about after the novelty wears off? The boredom factor must be immense (hence the spending of the cash!)
You can't go back to work, or at least your old work, as jealousy and envy would be hard to overcome.....

Whilst the pros are quite obvious, I wonder if the win is a poisoned chalice......

A million not enough? It's OK, I'm sorted.

I've got a new friend who emailed me last week to give me his sincere promises he is going to get 10 millions of my English Pounds to me if I can be helping him redistribute some surplus funds from the Uliboliboolu government contract he's been working on...
