Very true...... all voice commands should be associated with a hand signal as well if possible, and alwasy used together when training. If learnt at the same time, the hand signal will usually override a contradicting voice command, as dogs themselves communicate by body language rather than using sounds.

We're still having trouble getting our border collie to walk calmly on a lead, he just wants to chase everythiing!! We tried the halti and it helped, but the gentle leader seems to irritate him far less - every third step with the halti he was trying to swipe it off his face. They definitely stop them darting though and help to turn their head to where you want them to go, stopping them getting distracted (as much!!).

The stop start / change direction method has also helped a great deal, saying heel when they're where they should be. Ours is only seven months old though, so he's still extremely enthusiastic about everything unless he's asleep!! We'll get there eventually.....

Somehow Pete I have this vision of you on your hands and knees with your nose on the ground and your dog supervising the placing of a plate of dogmeat on the floor in front of you and leaving the room!

Would you be able to resist it?
