I didn't think it was the jailbreaking that allowed malicious software on your phone, I thought it was when you ssh'd into the phone itself

Go to any major hotel and connect to the wifi, scan and you'll likely find one or more Jailbroken iPhones wide open. SSH is the infection vector used right now, but more will follow or possibly have already.

Get a Griffin case & protector & you should be sorted, it's saved my bacon more than once.

Jailbreaking is when you bypass the Apple lockdown on the phone, giving you access to functionality & apps that Apple say no too.
Thanks for that, I'll get a case and screen protectors so i'm covered from day 1.
A trip to town is in order over the weekend to get what I need as hopefully the new phone will land in 1 week from now

Jailbreaking also allows you to unlock the phone, thus allowing you to use it on any network. This was a bigger deal when there were only single carriers of the iPhone, but as there are multiple networks offering it there is more choice, however, having it fully unlocked is nice if you happen to travel to another country as you could pop in a PAYG sim for that country and thus avoid horrendous roaming charges.
Got you

Having a PAYG sim to pop in when your away or on hoilday is a great idea, well worth considering.

If you borrow it you will end up wanting one for sure, I was hooked after an Apple shop demo

Anyway get your own, you need to spend some cash, that mattress must be full by now

If your still unsure buy an ipod touch, they do everything the iphone does bar the phone side of things and you can get the idea of what they do plus when you sell the touch they still command top prices 2nd hand so I doubt you would even loose much if you decided to sell it. My daughter has stopped using her DS in favour of the touch.

I have the iphone for 3 weeks now and I have to say, it's the best purchase I have done for a long time. I actually felt as if I was living in the woods for the last 3 years. Get the 32 GB version and a Griffin 'Reveal' case and you are all set.

To ssh into the iPhone it needs to be jailbroken, as ssh isn't installed/enabled by default.

The problem with the malicious software is that all iphones share a user named "mobile" with a password of "alpine". Thus if you jailbreak your iPhone and install ssh, and someone knows it's IP address then they can ssh into it using the default name and password. I believe the mobile user is also an admin account so you can use privilege escalation to run as the root user.

If you do install ssh then the first thing you should do is change the password for the mobile user (if you use cydia then it does mention in it's setting up ssh section how to do this), and what I also do is set/change the password for the root user as well.

I was like a kid at Christmas when I ordered mine. It was the orignal 3G launch day and they didn't deliver it until 6pm. Worked from home and got nothing done all day

You've made a great choice. Set it up then get on the App Store!

Bought the wife a 3gs for her birthday, she loves it and I have to agree it's a cracking phone.

Got the phone from Orange - same cost for the phone but the tarrif's were much better.Seems to be a better reception where we live too.

The phone isn't crap, not sure why people ever say that as it works better than any mobile I've owned in the past.

stevebt - what makes you say the phone is crap? You can ring people, answer calls, use via bluetooth, hold calls and take other calls and you have visual voicemail, not to mention calls being nice and clear - what more do you need from a phone?

Dont bother with a case KJD, one of the best points of the iPhone is how slim it is. Just get a screen cover, such as the Zagg InvisibleShield and away you go. Mine's been fine like that even with being dropped once.

It's jealousy, women do the same thing when they see another attractive female "yeah, but she has huge feet" you know the sort of thing.

The only thing I can knock my iphone for is the bluetooth. I cannot transfer my phonebook contacts over to the bluetooth thing in my car, which I used to be able to do with my old Nokia. Apart from that I'ts the very besy gadget I've ever owned!!

Call quality and reception isn't the best for a high end phone also the speakerphone is a joke.

Bluetooth phone works fine with my Alpine stereo. Phone and Speaker are pretty good as far as I can tell, certainly never been an issue.

It does have big feet though.

Mines a Kenwood BT 100. Theres a later one out that works with the contacts in the phone, but I'm to tight to buy it. Everything else works and you can see who's calling from the phone anyway so it's not that bigger deal I suppose.
