I've been in Afren since 50p and I believe the long term potential rewards could easily match DES or RKH. Afren are one of my safe punts.
As for the majors pulling out of the Falklands, depends on the strategy and business case at the time. BP sold Forties, made sense at the time as they could invest the cash better elsewhere at the time - looking back was it a good move - in todays climate, probably not.

Put the next £50,000 into another Bank, possibly non UK - but with EU Guarantees

Invest another £30,000 into the Stock Market - probably BP, Smithkline Beecham and Tesco.

Only when the above are satisfied, then spend what's left - WRX STi 330s?
only a little bit to pay off on the mortgage and otherwise debt free

banks dont look a good idea. I wanted to invest in oil last year when it was under $40 a barrel. its at double that now, but how mcuh further?

IMO, unless your going to be looking at it on a daily/weekly basis I wouldn't bother with direct buying of shares.

A similar idea to what SSU suggests but I'd look into stocks and shares ISAs and unit trusts. Google what UTs and ISAs are.
