If youve a small family and a surfer youll need the first ,if your a larger family/surfer with sails youll need the second
..or a transit

I was referring to your pointless "gay surfer" comment. I tell you what, you come down to Cornwall and try paddling out when it's double overhead (like last week) and barrelling. Then see how "gay" you think it is.
Yes the 3 series Touring isn't massive - but it's a lot bigger than a hatchback and plenty big enough for most. Yes four six footers will be low on legroom - that's why they make huge cars like the 7 series/S Class/MPVs. It's not an issue for us and for the benefits (fast, great handling, etc) we get, it's just not important. I have driven a 535d Touring many miles - I don't rate them as much as drivers cars and they are slower too. I also don't like the look of them - the saloon looks much better.
It's all about priorities - and in this case, being 5'8" and having a 5'6" wife is very useful. As it also is for surfing well.
Your comment was confrontational and pointless. And judging by 99% of your posts, that's hardly surprising.

Hodgy - eh?!
It's important to get to the beach quickly of course...
Just surfed head and a bit high PT. Ultra clean, heavy, barrelling, second surf of the week (1st on Monday). Car was ideal!
3 series is more C class than E class sized.

as usual on here, the main reason for not buying a BMW is the insanely mental attitude of BMW owners.
For god's sake, its only a car at the end of the day. a 3 series is a tiny little car, just like an impreza. don't kid us all its a tardis, because its not.
My impreza will go at some point because its laughable as a car for either 4 adults or 2 adults and a child, car seat, pram etc.
I will say, when I used to surf- I personally found all the various vw campers I had the ultimate vehicle- nice and roomy to get changed and you can make a brew and sit and chill out, with central heating !! I had nice modern diesel T4's- not crappy 70's nonsense. Damn fast too !!!
How any car is a surf vehicle, I've no idea, barring getting you there and then being wedged full of stinking wet kit ????

An Impreza wagon is basically a hatch. A 3 series Touring is much bigger. It's big enough for us - me, wife, a one year old, his baby chair, a labrador, two surfboards, all our kit (baby carrier rucksack, clothes, etc) without putting boards on the roof. Put them on the roof and there's a tonne of space. A full bootliner keeps the back dry and sand free. How big a car does anyone need?!
VW campers - slow - even the ones that claim to be fast are slower than an average diesel hatch/saloon, handle terribly, awful to park, badly specced, etc. I've used them many times and I'd rather get there comfortably and if staying overnight, book into a good hotel or B&B.
And every pretend surfer wanting the lifestyle has one - a great reason to avoid them.

Again, why have you suddenly become so anti 535d? It was the car to have a few months ago... just interested to hear why it is suddenly awful.
And the wagon is more than 'hatch'. We get baby (Recaro Young Xpert seat, likes to see where he is going), travel cot, pram, seat and luggage for 3 in the back no problem. Very practical family car and I've certainly had four adults in for a distance journey with no leg room issues at all. The roof height makes the Scooby feel quite spacious really.

I'm not a not anti 535d - I like them a lot. I just prefer the lighter, slightly quicker, better handling 335d Touring. Which is handy. And it's bigger inside than an Impreza Wagon by a fair margin. The old 3 series Tourings were tiny - the E91 is quite a lot bigger.

The wagon isn't going to be as big but to describe it as nothing more than a hatch is a bit short of the mark that's all. The car is a lot bigger than it seems. Cracking design really.
Due to miles we want a diesel auto with a bit of grunt so you are looking at this range. However, the new 330d is meant to be the dogs and the Accord estate comes spec'd up to the nines for a lot less cash. Considering a number of options at the mo so always good to hear views, especially ones that have changed a bit.

The 3 series has grown up a lot, but I can't help but view it as a rep mobile*.
My choice would be the 535D Tourer all day long and I think the 5 tourer looks very handsome, never did quite like the newer 3's.
*my truck is viewed as a pikey wagon I know.

Not quite sure I get the point of a 3 series estate. Most estate drivers need space and lots of it, the 3 series does not have that, especially for rear passengers.
So if you are a family man and want them to be comfortable buy a 5 series, if you are some single gay surfey dude who just needs to transport yourself and some colourful boards around consider the 3 series

This statement however is plain wrong. Rear legroom is AMPLE.
However, the piece de la resistance last summer was a mtb trip to the french alps, where I fit the following INSIDE the car, comfortably:
Me
Passenger
2 bike bags, one containing 2 x 6-inch travel trail bikes, one containing 2 x 8-inch travel downhill bikes
4 sets of 26" mtb wheels
nikon SLR with tripod and countless lenses
2 x full face helmets
2 x bags of FULL body armour
2 x bags of enough clothes for 1 week for each person
2 x toolboxes
4 x spare 26" tyres
Random other small bits and bobs
So there :P

Our Civic is a hatch, but looking at Matt's pics I don't think the 3 touring is any bigger than our Honda.
Just done some quick digging and the boot capacity figures appear to be:
BMW 335d SE Touring:
450 - 1375 litres
Honda Civic 2.2
485 - 1326 litres
I was hoping the BMW was going to be bigger than that as I really can't get the Mrs into the 5 series at all as she says they are too big!!
Edit: I can't remember how car stats work, but I gather those figures are for seats up and seats down? In which case does it mean the BMW has s smaller boot when the seats are up at 450 litres?

Dream - go to a dealers and check it out. Get everyone to sit in it - boot capacities are all well and good but it where you can stash stuff that matter - no good if 150 litres of that space is hard to reach. Yes it's a compact estate but it's a versatile one.
Ed - we haven't talked twin turbo 3 litre Tourings yet - still enjoying yours? Absolutely love mine (even though it's diesel!)!

In all honesty I would suggest you go and check one out in person.
I came out of an RS6 Avant, and although I imagine the volume is certainly greater, I still got the same total amount of gear for the alps trip in the three series as I did the Audi.
Also don't forget the importance of the usability of the volume not just headline volume figures. For example I can get a full snowboard Bag length ways in the three series touring, I'd be most surprised if you could do that with the Civic.
I also very much doubt it would have the width, especially at the access point of the boot, to slide my bike bag in the back.
cheers

Well that's the plan.
I've had an initial visit on my own and thought the boot was quite small compared to the Civic, especially as the Civic has the hidden wheel well box and the magic rear seats so I will go with the family and see what her indoors thinks.
I've got used to having a spacious car now so would be gutted to go backwards, although I wouldn't be going for the 335 I don't think.

End of story.
I will likely be at Watergate Bay in it next weekend if you're around.

Ed, the Civic will fit a mountain bike or two in the rear width ways as the rear seats lift up like cinema seats which is very useful.
I would imagine length would be better in the 3 series though for longer stuff.

I should also add that it is the first car I've ever owned that I didn't feel the need to do power mods - and yes that includes the RS6 and M5.
It just feels so perfectly balanced as it is, especially with the LSD and (fantastic) sport auto paddle shift. Would be nice to have a slightly fruitier exhaust note, and it's a real shame the differential is not supplied as standard, but otherwise I just love it.

Ed - do you use E90Post by any chance?! I got myself banned from it!
No mod plans for mine - great as it is and plenty quick enough. All the car most people need - just a case of deciding on the petrol or diesel - both seem to do a similar job in quite a different way. Main extras I have are big sunroof, sports suspension and terra leather plus some little options.
Dream - as Ed says, do just try one - I've taken surfboards to dealers before to check they fit in. I stick my MTBs on the roof (Thule aero bars plus 591 Pro roof carriers x 2) - easy to do.
A Civic has similarish room to a Golf - honestly the 3 series Touring is heaps bigger - although the R32 boot was shallow due to the 4WD gubbins.

Nope - unfortunately just been too busy for forums pretty much all of this year, hence why I haven't been on here for so long!
Good to see some of the regular names still around.

One of the reasons why Japanese cars have bigger or more usable boots than their German counterparts is greater width as a result of having very little trim etc. Hence why I can get my mountain bike (with both wheels off) in the boot of my Evo 8 - try that in a 3 series.
Incidentally, given that the 335d is quite a bit more expensive than a 330d both new and secondhand, what's the 335d got over a remapped 330d?

No gap in power delivery.
