A 2 gig card at full jpg resolution will get roughly 550-600 pictures on it....... but TBH, 4 gig's are so cheap now, I recommend you stock up on them... I get mine from 7dayshop.com and have never had a problem........
Don't worry about the 8gig cards and above - file transfer is often too slow and you don't want to be putting all your eggs (pictures) in the one basket in case it packs up - far better to spread them around in smaller 4 gig cards until you upload them all onto your PC and then ZAP the images off the card
so you can re-use them asap.

If you have lightroom or photoshop (or even better both) then RAW will definitely allow you to save a shot you would normally bin.
www.software4students.co.uk are doing an amazing offer on photoshop at the moment, literally a steal.

I wouldn't go as far as to say that.

Lots of SN/ESC members are just "point and shoot" compact camera users and as long as the picture looks OK, they will be happy with it... with no image manipulation ever wanted or needed.
The more "dedicated" snappers who have spent out tidy sums for a camera (and one or both of the image manipulation software programmes you mention) will probably be more interested in also learning the manipulation side of things, but even then, it will still take them a pretty long learning curve to understand a fraction of what you can do, and many will find it too complicated, too slow to learn, and just not bother... not everyone, but more than I realised....
I like to think I'm a bit further along the learning curve than some, yet I never ever use RAW, only high res jpg. I genuinely see no need to use RAW as for me a jpg file for most of the time is more than satisfactory.... The rare option to "recover" an occasional picture when taken in RAW isn't worth the hassle of that file format to me... I rarely take only one shot of a subject, so if one isn't right - bin it and move on to the next....
The RAW vs JPG argument is always in the photographic magazines, and I accept that some will swear for RAW and some JPG - it's personal choice I guess, bit like New Age vs Classic, Canon vs Nikon, etc, etc - both have their champions and in this instance I personally see little use for RAW image files - hence why I was suggesting to Matt to dump the RAW and use jpg for the time being to give him more disk availability... with just a single 2gig and a single 512k disk, he can't afford to take up space with RAW images...
That said - I'm all for the ESC snappers learning the various methods of image manipulation, so good luck to them for giving it a go, I personally just find RAW to be too heavy going to justify the use of it.... I rarely find anyone who "swops" between the two file formats when out taking pictures.... unless they are very dedicated photographers who really know what they are doing...
All IMHO of course and I fully accept that others may disagree with my opinion... and that if they do disagree, they stlll enjoy their photography, whatever they choose, which is what it is all about really.....

Sorry Looie RAW files all the way. It opens up a whole host of extra manipulation possibilites. I shoot most of the time in jpeg as i get fed up only being able to take a few shots at a time. But quality is lost. RAW files allow you to change the exposure when processing by a couple of f stops either way without loosing detail etc.
With the mem card size anything over 2gig is a waste imo. You start to loose recording and recall speed and quality of your images. Plus they can fail.
Photography is always a subject that most people will have differing views on. I spent a few years at college arguing with my photography tutor because we didn't agree on some of the technical aspects.
