Filled up with Tesco 99 this morning and added a bottle of Millers one shot, just to see if it made a difference.
The result was noticable quite early. It certainly picked its feet up much quicker low down and felt much more responsive all through the rev range.
I'd certainly use it again.

Andy: I did a test on NOS and as far as I am concerned it is snake juice.
Two octane boosters out of about 10 actually worked, Nitrous Formula was one and the other was Millers CVL which at the time was about £7 a bottle and from memory one bottle treated 20 litres. Millers Octane Plus did have an effect but only slight compared to the other two.

Cheers Harvey, yeah i've got my head around the H&S issues.
My question is, is it safe to use it as an OB without mapping?
Cost reasons more than anything. It would save me a 50 mile round trip and a gallon of V-Power, c.3 gallon, so getting on towards a £15 saving per fill up.
Your advise as usual will be much appreciated.

It would be foolish to try and run a lot of methanol without a remap and this is mainly because methanol needs a much richer AFR than petrol. I think Lambda on methanol is around 7 : 1 AFR but don't quote me. Methanol will run weaker because it reduces combustion temperatures but with a significant amount of methanol you will have to map to remain safe and there wouldn't be a lot of point running the methanol if you didn't do a map anyhow to get the advantages that are possible from say 20% mixture.
In the past when I have added 3 or 4 litres of methanol and then topped the tank up there is absolutely no doubt you could feel the difference even without a remap.

You will "get away" with using a small percentage methanol as an octane booster. I would say 5% or less but you will probably not get the best effect unless the car is mapped for that which may allow substantial ignition advance and hence more torque.

Even more so with the suggestion of 5%, i was considering 10% so now my meth will go even further.
I think 25ltr is in order as a trial then.
I will be logging it just to keep a check.
Thanks again for your time Harvey.

You might be able to play about with petrol and get away with it but the safety margin on Methanol is very fine so it is important that anyone that is encouraged to use Methanol is aware of the dangers and the need to be able to carry 6-12 litres of Methanol per tank full.
Plus, people need to remember that it is very hygroscopic so must be very well sealed indeed or it will absorb a lot of water.
Anything leaner than 7 is too lean. Stoich is at 6.4. We tend to run them on power at 5:1
Have any of you guys tried this as a det suppressant?

How did you calculate these RON figures?
Be very careful and think it out carefully and do not go into it without considering what you are doing.
Methanol is carcogenic.
Methanol spilt on skin/hands etc penetrates into the blood stream.
Methanol is highly volatile and fumes can ignite very easily.
Methanol burns with a clear flame so you cannot see it.
At least one of our members that I know has ended up in hospital, badly burned and badly shaken from the ignition of methanol. I understand his mobile phone was considered to be the source of ignition.
Consider whether the hassle and risks are worth while.
From testing on a specific vehicle I found that 8.5% each of methanol and toluene would add 5% to a car running 400 bhp on V-Power + NF.

I use this stuff. I put in 100ml per 45liters as in my book when I am on quarter of a tank I am empty.

I can does 10 fill ups at 11.50
I would add that I havent seen the stuff tested anywhere. I guess it works to a degree. How effective it is I dont know.

That is very old information there Steve.
Currently on V-Power compared to V-Power plus 20% methanol only I think there is nearly 10% additional power.
However, there are lots of drawbacks using such a high concentration of methanol even apart from the health and safety issues.
Carrying around 12 litres of methanol and then pouring it into the tank before you fill the car up makes you very conspicuous and has its own drawbacks.
