I suspect your brief watched too much of it (it was a corny US courtroom drama on a saturday night)

unless it was him and he had come out of retirement

In my experience a regular person will lose against the word of a policeman in court, (not personal experience but the experiences of a couple of people that I know personally).

However, I also know a highly trained traffic policeman, (a good, reasonable one), who recently saw a very dangerous driver get let off, despite his testimony and strong evidence of the actions of the driver. I wasn't in the court room and have no idea what the judge was thinking, but it sounded like a total travesty of a case to me.

Unless your mate can afford to employ someone like Nick Freeman, then I suggest he forgets contesting it. I reckon he will lose and get a higher fine if he does.

Accept it.........he can then spend the extra £100 (at least) he will have saved on a good night out and a curry

Now thats it been a few days, what is your mate going to do ? Accept the points or challenge it ?

I like the suggestion from someone up above to go to court and just make up a story, as you know your going to loose anyway, but what the heck. :-) Say the office pulled you over, pulled out his **** and asked you to do a breatheriser test on it :-) Ok, you will be fined, but still be on his record.

Think it's worth having a go - anyone know what the likely court costs are if it goes to the Magstrate's Court and he loses?
Another direction is to write to to the Chief Constable complaining about the impolite manner of the copper concerned, what he said as above, and that he spent a lot of time trying his best to find something else wrong with the car. Worth pointing out that that sort of behaviour is unlikely to improve the relations between the police and the public.
