I would also like to add, I wasn't concerned about a warranty I had complete faith in Chy's work as I have heard so many good things. Even with the bad stuff I've read recently I still wanted him to sleeve my block.

The only way he'd have a problem with me after doing the work was if the engine let go and the cause of that was something he did i.e liners dropping etc.

If he's so confident in his work then i really cannot see why we've had the issue we've had.
I'd of quite happily signed a disclaimer saying apart from the engineering work carried out by shy EVERYTHING else was my responsibility.

Fair point I guess but a slight exageration.

I've had issues with 2 tuning companies. (not including the two here)
TSL which I haven't dealt with for over 4 years, and we all know about SC who incedently left me postive feedback recently after I went and collected a flocked dash from them after purchasing it on ebay. So it can't be that bad lol

As far as SC are concerned I'm quite happy to say the hatchet has well and truly been buried and I'd be quite happy to source parts from them in the future.

I deal with a good few more companies and have never had any problems with any of them.

I appreciate I may be difficult to deal with sometimes. I know exactly what I want and I speak my mind and am not afraid of doing so. But if a company treats me well and gets things right then they will get nothing but the highest of praise.

I don't expect anything out of the ordinary with tuning companies. If they say they have parts they advertise I expect them to be delivered on time and be the right parts that I ordered. If I want a job doing I expect the job to be done properly and to the standard I'm paying for. I don't see anything too demanding in that. Does anyone else?

as said wasn;t trying to cause a argument so shant mention names or comment on any incident in the past.

all i'lll say bad reps are much harder to get rid of than good reps and if i had a someone coming to me who wanted machining done to then self build and knew about some chequred history then i wouldn't want the job. Admitedly i wouldn;t just ignor i'd just deliberatly price myself out of the work

From the two incedents I've had would hardly say I've got a bad reputation. I do see what you're saying though.

My point here is whatever the reason he didn't want the job he should have told me on the phone during the numerous telephone conversations we've had or via the several emails that have been sent.

Deliberatly pricing out of the job is just a spineless way of dealing with things too. I'd much rather someone said to me sorry mate but I dont want to do the job.

Had Chy done that from the off without me wasting my time then this wouldn't have been an issue at all.

Daz,

Just to set the record straight for others reading this thread.

Chy's premesis with unpainted oil stained floors and racks and racks of old rusting second hand parts is nothing like the white tiled floor RCM workshop now is it? The operating theatre cleanliness of the RCM engine build room there speaks volumes too. Zen's place is also top notch.
That is the breakers business next door, although they seem to share some space, ramps, etc. The engine build area is completely different and spotless I can assure you.

Just to give a balance of opinion, I on the other hand have had a completely different experience when dealing with Chy / Pennine. Despite my build not being a big money build, I feel I have been treated very well. Chy spent a lot of time on understanding my exact requirements and was happy to accomodate all the little extras I asked for. He has gone over and above what I could have expected in some instances. I will post up the details of my build in a few weeks time and everyone can judge for themselves.

Before I get accused of being a cheque book tuner ... I have saved and collected parts for years in order to do this build. There is a lot of work on this build I would have loved to do myself, but with a young family the one thing I am severely short of these days is time.

Daz I hope it all works out for you in the end.

Can't fault you for that mate.

I don't for one second doubt Chy is good at what he does. I simply wouldnt have gone there otherwise. I'm sure you're in excellent hands with him.

Again had Chy been interested in doing the job instead of just fobbing me off I'm sure he'd have shown me round his premesis. It felt like I wasn't welcome there in the first place, then once there he couldnt get rid of me quick enough. It's that more than anything that's annoyed the crap out of me.

I've said my bit now. No point going over it again and again.

Chy if you do read this please just be upfront with the next person that asks you for engineering work only. Don't invite them over and expect to be able to talk them into you doing a full engine build. Some of us just want to build ourselves. If you're not interested in providing just engineering services then communicate that to everyone because up until my visit I assumed you'd be happy to do that.

No wonder Daz...they have probably read this thread and you have frightened the living the daylights of them for the fear of their name been splattered all over this thread

Likewise you can't judge a book by its cover

Good luck with your next engine build and i will be keeping a keen eye on the progress just like the thousand folks out there

Not a dig at RCM but looking through their online shop it is quite easy to see why they can afford fancy premises and the like. There prices are way over the norm for similar parts from other tuners.
No the quality of their product is not that much better than everyone other tuner out there to justify the pricing.

Daz -

Gd to see you being so noble with your last few responses.

I have spoken to Chy on this matter and believe there has been a mis-understanding in this matter. That said, Pennine Subaru are undergoing some positive and exciting changes, and I can assure you that comments/pointers made by both you and others will be taken into consideration and applied as necessary. This is not admitting blame on any parties.

As for Pennine Subaru, they tend to mostly carry out whole engine builds whether 2.35 or 2.5. I had the pleasure of spending a few hours with Chy about 3 weeks ago when I went to see my own 500+ build update.

Chy went through his rigorous process of what he does when commencing on any engine builds. His whole ethos is to offer customers a "whole engine build package" on which he is then able to provide a full guarantee. As we have seen with Andy H's build, if things do go wrong Chy will fix these under the guarantee given. Parts can be supplied by the customer or through another part supplier, but ultimately the responsibility of the engine build would be Pennine's. Pennine offer something unique in their 2.5 builds and as such would like to ensure that this uniqueness is upheld by retaining full responsibility for the whole engine.

Chy is able to carry our normal services but majority of his customers are there for engine builds. When my wr1 is ready (soon!), Chy/Pennine will also be able to demonstrate the artistic side of engine builds not just pure brutal power.

I do hope everything gets sorted out with your build - let us know how it progresses.

Cheers,

Jag

I see what you're saying here Daz. It's almost impossible to find that combination of knowledge and good customer service. I luckily found that in a specialist while I had my Subaru, but they are few and far between.

Oh and RCM are the muts nuts. Everything about them is quality.

Jag,

As sh*tted off as I am with being treated like some numpty at no time have i questioned Chy's ability, just the way I have been treated.

I'm glad Chy has been aware of this and hopefully lessons can be learned. All it would have taken was a little bit of communication. I was very specific with my request in that I wanted a CDB bored and sleeved to 2.5, i wanted it converted to rear thrust and modified to accept 14mm head studs. That was it no more. At no time until I actually went there was there any hint of him not wanting to do just that.

What's more annoying is that I had made a brief enquiry about 18 months ago and had an email from Chy happily quoting to do exactly what I'd asked.

So when I got fobbed off you can see why it annoyed me as I couldnt understand what had changed.

Anyway it's drawn the matter to a close. I raised my issue and got it off my chest.

I'm dropping my block off at Zen tomorrow but I shall be ringing them first to make sure its ok before I undertake a 300 mile round trip this time

I'm proper looking forward to all these Pennine builds coming to fruition.

what utter bollocks.
Daz wants to take the ingredients (ie block) and to then move on with them with his own cooking, in your analogy Daz is the restraunter (ie putting it all together to make a meal) and Penine the supplier of part of the ingredients.
Although you have hung your colours from a very high pole on another thread
Just a little thought required.

From 22b, Daz is very well placed to collect together all the parts he needs and do so with them as he wishes, he has form, a proven track record.

This could all have never got to print with Penine simply declining the work on the phone in my opinion.
Every company has the absolute right to accept or decline work, I think Daz is pi55ed that they didn't set their stall out early enough for him.

However Daz, I agree with the camp that thinks naming 50% of the companies that ticked you off a tad unfair and looks a little one-sided.

About bloody time you got that Solaris Banny!

Daz - Think the Pennine engines are not too far off now. Mine will be fired up in the next day or so.

RCMs premises are really old,in fact its just an old workshop attached to the house, not really fancy at all, they don't even have a rolling road yet, they only have one ramp and room for 3/4 cars, but they keep it nice.
