Cheers Robert - I do like those rims but will keep it as it is for now.

Having said that, the Star alloys are an absolute SLAG to keep clean (and to wash)!! Using silicone sealant to try and keep the dirt off. I do like them though. Those do look easier to wash!

Oh and mine's on 225/45s (17") all round - nice and subtle. The 255s RFTs those come with are silly money. 225s are just about bearable. Just. And it will eat rear tyres for breakfast!

 

Congrats on your purchase. The 335d is a suprisingly good car and standard power delivery is fantastic.

What can you do with a 3.0D (last shape) late 2006 X5? Inlaws did consider DMS for a remap but never got round to it.

512 lbs ft - flipping heck!! Will get used to what I have (gone from a 150bhp Astra - tsk tsk!) but may well be interested soon.

You can save a few £££ on rear 18" tyres by putting 235/40/18's on instead of the very very expensive 255/35/18's. They fit fine on the 8.5" rim.

Nice one Chris! You have the right colour and wheels for the 5 series. Although the wheels look even harder to clean than mine!

 

I went in a Audi 3.0 tdi the other day which was fairly nippy, similar I would imagine to a 330D but it left me a bit cold, it shifted but just as it started to shift and you thought you were on your way it changed gear (even in sport) and then repeated it,the suspension was hard and despite being almost brand new you could feel vibrations through the seats at idle. It was grey with Black interior, very smart but grey german cars with big diesel engines are just so predictable.

I know modern diesels are devastantingly effective, fast and frugal but they just leave me cold, not saying my Saab is any better, its fairly quick, crap on fuel (petrol) but still leaves me cold but not as much as diesels do.

The BMW is a lovely car but I dont know if I could bring myself to buy one with a diesel engine, are they as souless as an Audi or do they make a nice sound.

I got the old Fiat 500 running right last night and by any measure its a horrible contraption but that little engine getting beaten to death feels ten times more fun and much sportier than my Saab despite being pathetically slow, it pops on the overun and makes a right racket.

I think I am going to dispense with going for fast as you end up fast but otherwise dull cars like my Saab, what modern car has a bit of soul, that earthy and satisfying feeling you get, MK1 and MK2 Golfs did it quite well, do Type R Honda's, does any diesel motor do it ?

Have to add, I dont do much mileage so I dont need anything sensible, but I can see why these big diesels make sense if you do a lot of miles.

 

Jacko - for me it's the torque and range between fuel stops.

I agree about the Audi - I did look at one but the 335d trounces it (as does the 330d) in every single area - quicker, lighter, much better emissions, etc.

Now I'm clearly biased but I genuinely like the sound of the engine - it growls like some kind of racing truck or big powerboat and revs very quickly. The 335d and the Touraeg V10 are the only diesels I like the sound of.

Fling it round some bends and unlike nose heavy Audis, it's genuinely fun - that 50/50 balance makes a lot of difference. The steering is weighty and pretty feelsome, the suspension is firm but smooth, the brakes are excellent - I just like the way it does pretty much everything well yet doesn't look like some Max Power special.

Agree that many cars have been dulled by excess weight and size but there are still some fun ones left - and I think the Beemer is genuinely fun.

Point to note: You can beet the 155 mph limiter if you're in 5th

I found this out yesterday evening on my way back from Hamburg Airport on an unrestricted part of the Autobahn. 160 mph and still going in 5th (manual, using paddles).

 

Chris - nice! No German trips planned but this car needs to do some European touring!

 

Does sound preferable to the Audi, which I think was one of those cars that wows you with a nice interior, pace and competence but you then realise its not much fun, Audi' are brilliant it has to be said but I think people buy them a lot for the image nowadays, Silver = Check, Diesel = Check, S Line = Check, Black Leather = Check, Built in Sat Nav = Check and then forget to see if they like driving it.
